Real Salt Lake will contest its final international friendly of the 2008 season tomorrow, Wednesday, Sept. 3, when it plays host to popular Mexican side U.A.N.L. Tigres at Rice-Eccles Stadium, with kick-off slated for 8:00 p.m. MT. Tickets for tomorrow exhibition contest can be purchased by calling the RSL offices at 801-924-8585, in person at the RSL office at 515 S. 700 East, Suite #2R (Trolley Corners building) in downtown Salt Lake City, or online by visiting www.RealSaltLake.com. Fans that can't make it can follow the action live via RSL's official radio partners - KALL 700 Sports (with RSL First Kick pre-game coverage beginning at 7:00 p.m.) and "Ke Buena" 1600-AM.
Tigres will mark the third international opponent for Real Salt Lake during the summer of '08, with Utah's MLS side hoping to capture its first win in exhibition play this year after falling to Mexican champs Club Santos Laguna (1-4 L) and Costa Rican powerhouse Deportivo Saprissa (1-2 L) in July. Those two results dropped RSL's all-time record in international friendlies to an even 4-4-2 heading into Wednesday's contest. Tigres is coming off a pair of wins last week in league play that upped its record in the recently-started Mexican Apertura campaign to 4-1-1 and kept the Monterrey-area side in second place in the Group 3 standings, just three points behind leader San Luis.
RSL Returns to the Road for Huge Weekend Clash at LA Galaxy
In addition to Wednesday's friendly, Real Salt Lake (8-8-6, 30 pts.) will have one eye focused all week on its return to League play this Saturday, Sept. 6, when the Utah side will travel to Southern California to square off against the Los Angeles Galaxy (6-9-7, 25 pts.) in a key Western Conference showdown against Bruce Arena's new squad. Kick-off from The Home Depot Center in Carson, Calif. is slated for 8:30 p.m. MT, with broadcast coverage on KSL-TV 5.3 Digital (Comcast Ch. 105) beginning with the America First Credit Union Pre-Game Show at 8:00 p.m. Fans can also follow the action live over the radio airwaves on KALL 700 Sports (with RSL First Kick pre-game coverage beginning at 7:30 p.m.) and "Ke Buena" 1600-AM.
Real Salt Lake and the Galaxy will close out their abbreviated two-game season series on Saturday, the sides each bringing a point into the proceedings out of their first meeting on May 3, a 2-2 draw at Rice-Eccles Stadium. In that match, Real Salt Lake would shoot out of the blocks to an early 2-0 lead thanks to goals by forwards Fabian EspÃndola and Kenny Deuchar, only to see a pair of world-class strikes four minutes apart by David Beckham even up the contest just before halftime. Real Salt Lake will look to draw even in the all-time series against the Galaxy, with May's draw bringing the Utah side's record against L.A. to 4-5-3, which includes moderate success at The Home Depot Center via a 2-4-0 road ledger.
FW Fabian EspÃndola Named MLS Player of the Week for Week 23
The North American Soccer Reporters (NASR) today announced that RSL FW Fabian EspÃndola has been voted Major League Soccer's Player of the Week for Week 23 of the 2008 season. The 23-year-old Argentine striker earned the accolade after scoring both goals in Real Salt Lake's 2-0 victory over the Colorado Rapids in a Rocky Mountain Cup rivalry showdown last Friday evening at Rice-Eccles Stadium. The Player of the Week award is the first such honor for EspÃndola, whose start for RSL last Friday was his first since late May, this after the Argentine sat out most of the summer due to a left knee injury. EspÃndola, who joins FW Robbie Findley as the only other Player of the Week recipient for RSL this season (Week 10), now shares the club's scoring lead alongside Findley, with EspÃndola scoring his five goals in only 11 appearances thus far in 2008.
MF Andy Williams Named to Jamaican Roster for Pair of CONCACAF World Cup Qualifiers
Real Salt Lake will be without the services of Andy Williams throughout the next 10 days, this after the veteran midfielder joined the Jamaican National Team (0-0-1, 1 pt.) over the weekend in advance of a pair of CONCACAF region World Cup qualifiers. After scoring Jamaica's lone goal in a 1-1 draw at Canada on Aug. 20, Williams (87 caps, 13 goals) will be part of the Reggae Boyz squad that will face a stern challenge in road contests at group favorite Mexico (1-0-0, 3 pts.) this Saturday, Sept. 6 (4:00 p.m. CT) and Honduras (0-1-0, 0 pts.) next Wednesday, Sept. 10 (7:30 p.m. MT). Saturday's match in Group C play was originally scheduled as Jamaica's home leg against Mexico, but was moved by FIFA to Azteca Stadium in Mexico City after Jamaica's National Stadium was deemed unplayable due to damage suffered during Hurricane Gustav last week. Jamaica and Mexico have swapped home dates in the series, the return leg in Kingston now set for Oct. 11.
