Real Salt Lake Match Preview & Game Notes

Real Salt Lake News Release

SANDY, Utah (Friday, September 3, 2010) - After taking an exhaustive cross-continental trek last week, Real Salt Lake (11-4-7, 40 pts.) will gladly return to its Rio Tinto Stadium home tomorrow, Saturday, Sept. 4, when the defending MLS Cup champs will look to stymie the New York Red Bulls (11-7-4, 37 pts.), featuring an attack fueled by strikers Thierry Henry and Juan Pablo Angel. Kickoff for the contest, presented by XanGo, is set for 7:00 p.m. MT in Sandy.

Real Salt Lake will be hoping to equal a bit of Major League Soccer history on the weekend, as a win or a draw will allow the defending MLS Cup champs to even the League-record 22-game home undefeated streak set by the Columbus Crew across the 2008-09 regular seasons. In addition, both Real Salt Lake and New York remain very much in the hunt for the MLS Supporters Shield (regular season) crown, with the Utah side just three points behind the league-leading L.A. Galaxy, and the Red Bulls just a win away from catching up with RSL.

Tickets for Saturday's contest remain available and can be purchased online at www.RealSaltLake.com and www.RioTintoStadium.com, over the phone at 801-727-2700, and in person at the Rio Tinto Stadium Box Office until 6:00 p.m. on Friday and on gameday beginning at 10:00 a.m. MT. Fans that can't make it to Sandy can follow the action live on KUSG 2.2 / Comcast 111 / Dish 12 (followed by the America First Credit Union Post-match Report), ESPN 700, ESPN Deportes 1600-AM, and Homero 106.1-FM. RSL's Official Twitter feed will also provide constant updates throughout the contest at www.Twitter.com/RealSaltLake.

New York served as Real Salt Lake's biggest nemesis across the Utah side's first five MLS seasons, as the Claret-and-Cobalt have gone just 1-4-6 across regular season and postseason play against the Red Bulls in 11 meetings. However, that lone win came in the teams' most recent meeting last Oct. 14, in which RSL used late goals from MF Andy Williams and FW Fabian Espíndola to post a 2-0 victory in Sandy that bolstered the squad's playoff chances. Real Salt Lake is undefeated against New York at home in regular season play with a 1-0-4 mark, but the Claret-and-Cobalt were downed 0-1 in the two sides' most important Utah-based meeting, the 2008 Western Conference Championship, which the Red Bulls took on a Dave van den Bergh tally in just the fourth-ever contest at Rio Tinto Stadium back on Nov. 15, 2008.
