Ray Miron Presidents' Cup Finals Game 5 Recap
May 20, 2011 - Central Hockey League (CHL) News Release
In what was possibly their best post-season showing, the Bossier-Shreveport Mudbugs took apart the Colorado Eagles by a final score of 7-2 moving to within a win of capturing their fourth Championship and first since 2001.
David Rutherford erupted for two first period goals and finished with a hat trick and an assist, while line mate Nick Layton had two goals and a helper.
The game had a much more physical feel to it in the early going with each team generating scoring chances early. Colorado's Daymen Rycroft had two good chances including a breakaway that he missed the net wide left on.
Brett Smith, Nathan Moon and Steven Crampton had the best chance early with their line creating a point-blank opportunity for Smith in front of Eagles goaltender Kyle Jones that he made the save on.
Bossier-Shreveport had the first power play of the game thanks to a high sticking call on Steve Haddon against David Rutherford who made the Eagles pay with a great effort eluding a pair of Colorado defensemen and then roofing a shot by Jones for his 10th goal of the playoffs and first since Game 1 of the series (Rutherford was suspended for Game 4). Smith and Simon Mangos earned the assists at the 7:23 mark of the opening period. The Mudbugs entered the game 7-4 when scoring the first goal during the post-season.
The Mudbugs would go back on the power play at the 9:38 mark of the period and on the third shot with the man advantage, Rutherford would further unleash his revenge scoring his 11th of the playoffs and his second of the night giving his team a 2-0 lead.
Bossier-Shreveport moved to 2 for 2 with the man advantage after going 1 for their previous 16 in Game's 2-4.
The Eagles started to self-destruct a bit taking two more minor penalties but the penalty killers did their jobs as they kept the Mudbugs from doing any more damage.
Colorado had one chance with the man advantage in the final two minutes of the period but were unable to connect as the Mudbugs took their 2-0 lead into the first intermission.
Colorado kept with the trend they have established in the series, outshooting the Mudbugs 13-12 in the opening period as Ryan Munce stopped all 13 shots he faced. Colorado entered the game outshooting Bossier-Shreveport 123-95 in the series.
Bossier-Shreveport added to their lead in the second period at the 5:20 mark with Rutherford once again creating offense by taking the puck behind the net with speed and then throwing it out in front to Nick Layton who pushed it past Jones for his sixth goal of the playoffs, extending his point streak to eight games. Rutherford Justin Aikins had the assists making the score 3-0.
The home team wasn't done as they began to put the game further out of reach chasing Jones from the game at the 11:37 mark when defenseman Jim Jorgensen's wrist shot knuckled its way into the net for his fourth score of the playoffs. Smith and Crampton were given the assists.
Less than a minute later, with Andrew Penner in net, Layton took a turnover and on the right wing was able to backhand a shot that counted as his second goal of the night making the score 5-0 at the 12:26 mark of the second period.
The Mudbugs would outshoot the Eagles 14-6 in the period holding a game lead of 26-19.
On the 21st shot of the game for the Eagles, the shutout bid for Munce would be lost as Dan Sullivan scored his fourth goal of the post-season assisted by Adam Chorneyko and Brett Thurston at the 4:18 mark of the third frame.
Rutherford would continue his stellar night just after the Eagles got on the board snapping a shot over the shoulder of Penner for his third goal of the night and 12th of the playoffs taking over the league lead from teammate Jeff Kyrzakos. The 12 goals in a single post-season are the most ever scored by a Mudbug player.
The home team wasn't done as they continued their dominant offensive performance with Aikins scoring his eighth of the playoffs assisted by Layton at the 16:14 mark making the score 7-1.
A.J. Hau scored his professional playoff goal off a face-off finishing off the scoring for both teams.
Bossier-Shreveport outshot the Eagles 36-34 as Munce finished with 32 saves improving to 3-2 in the playoffs.
