
Rattlesnakes Continue To Add Depth

LAREDO, TEXAS - The Laredo Rattlesnakes Football Team announced the signing of Kicker Radamez Rubio and Craig "Ironhead" Heyward Jr. Rubio is a native of Mexico City and played last season with the Arizona Rattlers of the Arena Football League. Craig Heyward Jr. is the son of the late Craig "Ironhead" Heyward and brother of current Pittsburgh Steelers Defensive Lineman Cameron Heyward. The team also announced the signings of Wide Receiver Corey Gardhigh, Linebacker Duval Zimmerman, WR/DB Matt Leotti, Defensive Lineman/ Fullback Lawrence Thames, and Defensive Lineman/Linebacker Seath Kimball. The team also announced a partnership with WestWind Homes where one lucky fan will be chosen at the final regular season home game and have the opportunity to kick a 50 yard field goal to win a home from WestWind homes.
Rubio lives in Mexico City and attended Universidad Iberoamericana. He has spent the last several seasons kicking for the former AF2 team the Rio Grande Valley Dorados, the Green Bay Blizzard and La Crosse Spartans of the IFL, and last season with the Arizona Rattlers of the AFL. He has also been invited to private workouts with the San Francisco 49ers and Tampa Bay Buccaneers of the NFL and the Omaha Nighthawks and Florida Tuskers of the UFL. Rubio was also a member of the Miami Dolphins training camp in 2008. "We are excited to be able to find a kicker with the experience that Rubio brings," said Head Coach Rod Miller.
The 6' 240 pound Heyward, who played collegiately at Middle Tennessee State, is the oldest son of legendary NFL running back Craig "Ironhead" Heyward. As a walk-on at Middle Tennessee State, Heyward played primarily on special teams. His brother, Cameron, was a starting defensive end for the Ohio State Buckeyes for three years and was drafted by the Pittsburgh Steelers in the first round of the 2011 NFL Draft. "With the signing of Craig Heyward, we have added to our team a strong and powerful player at a crucial position," said head coach Rod Miller. "Craig is an impressive downhill runner who runs behind his pads." Heyward played for the Trenton Steel during the 2011 season under Coach Miller. Heyward received an invitation for a tryout at a mini camp for the New Orleans Saints.
The 5' 11" Duval Zimmerman attended Pace University where he played Strong Safety. Matt Leotti brings additional versatility to the Rattlesnakes where he can play both sides of the ball. He played for the Trenton Steel last season and attended Bowdoin College where he played defensive back and linebacker. Defensive Lineman/Linebacker Seath Kimball played linebacker for Eastern Oregon University where he was named to the 2010 American Football Coaches Association NAIA Coaches' All-America Team. Kimball led the nation in tackles for loss (21.5) and was number 2 in the country in sacks with 11.5. Anther addition to the team is Defensive Lineman/Fullback Lawrence Thames. Thames is 6'2" and weighs 300 pounds and attended Chowan College. Corey Gardhigh is a 6'3" 215 pound wide receiver from Benedict College. Coach Miller said, "We are excited to add the kind of depth that these players bring to the team. They can't wait for the season to begin."
One lucky fan will have the opportunity to kick a 50 yard field goal for $125,000 towards a new WestWind Homes. One lucky fan will be randomly drawn at the final regular season home game and if that fan makes the 50 yard field goal, they will win $125,000 to use towards a new WestWind Home. "We are excited about the partnership with WestWind Homes to help us bring first class entertainment and excitement to Laredo," said team owner Chad Dittman.
