Rattlers Top Power Rankings for Fifth Straight Week
Published on June 18, 2012 under Arena Football League (AFL) News Release
CHICAGO - A bye week did not hurt the Arizona Rattlers (10-3) in the Week 16 AFL Power Rankings. The Rattlers remain in the top spot for the fifth consecutive week. The Rattlers travel to the BMO Harris Bradley Center on Friday, June 22 for their second matchup of the year with the Milwaukee Mustangs (5-8). The Rattlers edged the Mustangs 71-65 in Week 2.
The tightly-contested second and third spots in the AFL Power Rankings continue to fluctuate, with the San Antonio Talons (10-3) reclaiming the position in Week 16 based on winning streak and strength of schedule. The Talons earned their League-leading seventh consecutive win in Week 15, defeating the Iowa Barnstormers (5-9) by a margin of 57-35. The Talons will be challenged in Week 16 by the Tampa Bay Storm (6-7), who are undefeated at home in 2012.
The team with the best record in the League comes in third in the AFL Power Rankings, as the Philadelphia Soul (11-3) drop one spot despite becoming the first team this season to earn a playoff berth and clinch their division. The Soul convincingly defeated the defending ArenaBowl-champion Jacksonville Sharks (6-7) and will host the Pittsburgh Power (3-10) in the second "Keystone Collision" meeting of the year in Week 16.
A Week 15 photo-finish in Spokane bumped the Utah Blaze (9-5) up to the number four spot in the AFL Power Rankings. Blaze QB Tommy Grady became the single-season franchise record holder for passing touchdowns in the game after tossing nine against the Spokane Shock (7-6). Grady has a League-leading 110 on the year, just seven passing scores shy of the single-season AFL record. The Blaze host the South Division-leading Georgia Force (7-7) in Week 16.
The San Jose SaberCats dropped one spot to fifth in the AFL Power Rankings following a 41-57 loss to the Kansas City Command (3-10) in Week 15. SaberCats QB Mark Grieb tossed five touchdowns in the game, bringing his career total to 898, just two passing scores shy of 900. Only two quarterbacks in pro football history - Clint Dolezel and Aaron Garcia - have reached the 900-touchdown plateau. Grieb and the SaberCats host the Spokane Shock in an important West Division matchup in Week 16.
The AFL Power Rankings are calculated on AFLFieldPass.com using vPower(tm), a scoring system based on winning percentage, strength of schedule, scoring percentage, and win-streak. The scale is normalized from 0 (lowest) to 100 (highest).
