Rattlers Remain Atop Week 9 vPower Rankings

May 15, 2013 - Arena Football League (AFL) News Release

CHICAGO - The Arizona Rattlers (7-1) remain atop the latest Arena Football vPower Rankings, as tabulated on AFLFieldPass.com, following a 65-49 victory over the Utah Blaze (3-4) in Week 8.

It was the second time this season the Rattlers defense came up big against reigning AFL MVP Tommy Grady and his Blaze squad. Seven of Grady's AFL-high 17 interceptions have come at the hands of the opportunistic Rattlers, who lead the League with a +19 turnover margin. The defending ArenaBowl champions will square off next with the Chicago Rush (4-4) on Sunday, May 19. Kickoff is set for 4:00 p.m. ET.

Coming in at No. 2 this week are the San Jose SaberCats (5-2), who are 3-0 with Russ Michna under center this season. The team's most recent victory came against the visiting Tampa Bay Storm (5-3) in Week 8, when the SaberCats defense held the League's leading rusher, Storm quarterback Adrian McPherson, to just five yards in San Jose's 64-34 victory.

The SaberCats will be challenged by another Florida team in Week 9, as they travel to Jacksonville for a matchup with the No. 3-ranked Sharks (6-2). After starting the season 6-0, the Sharks have dropped two straight and will look to rebound against a red hot SaberCats squad in Week 9. Kickoff is set for 7:00 p.m. ET on Saturday, May 18.

Following a lopsided 62-16 victory over the New Orleans VooDoo (1-6) in Week 8, the Iowa Barnstormers (4-4) move up five spots to No. 4 in this week's vPower Rankings. The win also moved Iowa back into the lead for the Central Division, as they hold a point differential tiebreaker over the Chicago Rush (4-4). Iowa will look to get above .500 for the first time since the beginning of April when they travel to Salt Lake City for a matchup with the Utah Blaze on Saturday, May 18. Kickoff is set for 9:00 p.m. ET.

The Spokane Shock (5-3) helped make history in Week 8, but could not finish off the Orlando Predators (2-5), falling to future Hall of Famer Aaron Garcia and the Predators, 83-82, in the second-highest scoring game in AFL history. The two teams combined for a League-record 103 first half points in the contest. After beginning the season 5-0, the Shock have lost three straight and will look to get back on track against the New Orleans VooDoo this Friday night. Kickoff is set for 10:00 p.m. ET.
