Raptors Deal Horsmen first loss of the season

ROCKFORD - The Rock River Raptors sent home an Armed Forces Day Crown of 32-hundred screaming Raptor fans home happy as they dealt the Lexington Horsemen their first loss of the season 62-43 at the "Rock Pile."

Rockford heads into their bye week with a 6-3 record while Lexington is now 7-1 on the season.

The Raptors out-scored the visitors 34-15 in the second quarter to turn a 12-7 first quarter deficit into a 41-27 half-time lead.

In the second quarter, Rock River quarterback Ben Sankey, who returned to the line-up after missing last weeks game against Fort Wayne with a shoulder injury, tossed four touchdown passes in the second stanza alone. Sankey found Tyrece Butler from 14 and 19 yards out, hooked up with Luke McArdle for scores of 3 and 10 yards. Defensive end Fernandez Shaw completed the Raptors scored when he picked off Eddie Eviston's pass and ran 20 yards for a score.

The Raptors then turned to Randy Bell in the second half as the former Lexington Horseman scored three times two from one yard out and the final score from 20 yards away. Bell ended the night carrying the ball 22 times for 95 yards. He also caught one pass for seven yards.

Lexington took an early 6-0 lead as Eviston found Chad Spencer with a nine yard scoring pass. Not to be outdone Sankey hit Ade Adeyemo from nine yards out to give the Raptors a 7-6 lead. Eviston's 35 yard pass to John Cooper gave the Horsemen the lead back at 12-7.

Along with the five touchdown passes, Sankey completed 15-of-28 passes for 136 yards and no interceptions. Bulter ended the night with seven catches for 77 yards while McArdle added six catches for 46 yards.

Defensively, Jermaine Hampton and Ty Myers had eight tackles each and Shaw added six stops and terrorized Eviston for three sacks while the Raptors offensive line did not allow a sack.

Rock River returns to action on June third for a rematch with the Horsemen in Lexington at Rupp Arena.
