Rio Grande Valley Killer Bees News Release

HIDALGO, TX: September 14, 2004 – The Rio Grande Valley Killer Bees of the Central Hockey League added a new addition to the 2004/2005 roster with the signing of forward Bob Rangus.

"Bob is a big strong forward that has good skills," said Killer Bees Head Coach/Director of Hockey Operations Tracy Egeland. "He had a good first year last season and what I like is the fact that he started in one league and advanced to another and was able to adapt."

Laurium, Michigan native Rangus split his rookie season last season with the ECHL's Cincinnati Cyclones and the South East Hockey League's (SEHL) Knoxville Ice Bears and combined for 15 goals and 16 assists for 31 points in 58 games. Rangus began the regular season in Knoxville, where he played 30 games and tallied 11 goals and 10 assists for 21 points. He left Knoxville twice to join the Cyclones to fill in Cyclone roster voids, but later became a Cyclones mainstay in January and finished out the season in Cincinnati. He totaled 10 points (4g,6a) in 28 games with the Cyclones.

The 6'2", 200-pound forward was a product of Calumet (MI) High School, where he earned Michigan's Mr. Hockey award in 1998 before enduring a junior career with the North American Hockey League's (NAHL) Sault Ste. Marie Indians. He was the "Most Improved Player" on the Indians squad in 98/99 as a teammate of Buffalo Sabres goaltender and former Hobey Baker Award winner Ryan Miller. He was an NAHL All-Star in 99/00 with 15 goals and 17 assists for 32 points in 51 games to rank third on the squad. The 25 year-old (turns 26 on 9/18) was a student-athlete at Michigan Tech and played two seasons (00/01 - 01/02) combining for 4 points (2g,2a) in 25 games. He transferred in 02/03 to NCAA Division III Finlandia University (Hancock, MI) and joined his younger brother, Brian, on the Lions squad. Rangus led the Lions in scoring with 16 points (10g,6a) in 10 games.

Rangus is the 16th player signed by the Killer Bees this season. He joins goaltenders Jeff Levy and Jacque Vezina; defensemen Derek Holland, Sean Gillam, Josh Mizerek, Darcy Smith, Jason Tessier; and forwards Anthony Donskov, Matt Donskov, Blaz Emersic, Jason Hawes, Matic Kralj, Troy Linna, Bill Newson and Ryan Shmyr. With less than 128 games played as a professional, Rangus qualifies as a "developmental player," giving the Killer Bees six signed by the squad (joins Anthony Donskov, Matt Donskov, Jason Hawes, Matic Kralj and Jacque Vezina). CHL rules require each team to have at least five players on their squad who have participated in 128 or fewer professional games, and those players are classified as "developmental players."
