Marquette Rangers News Release
Marquette - The Marquette Rangers Junior hockey team needed something positive following last Saturday's disappointing loss to Janesville. They got that something positive beating the North Iowa Outlaws of the North American Hockey League Central Division 4 -3 in overtime Friday night at Lakeview Arena.
Hancock native Tanner Kero ended a long and suspenseful evening scoring with 19 seconds remaining in the extra period to give Marquette the win; and two key points in the NAHL North Division race.
"We were as good as we've been all year in the neutral zone tonight," Rangers head coach Kenny Miller said. "We fore-checked hard and created some quality chances, which had been lacking the past few games; and I was very pleased with how we played in our zone against their offense."
"What I really liked was that we stuck to the game plan, we did give up two breakaway goals but overall I was very pleased because we didn't quit and kept after them all night. It was a full sixty minutes which we've been preaching all season; we got that and turned it into a win."
Marquette took a 1 - 0 lead at 1:56 of the first period on a shorthanded goal by Garrett Ladd, who tipped the puck under the pad of Outlaw goaltender Trent Caspar.
Caspar finished the night with 34 saves on 38 Marquette shots.
North Iowa tied it at the 4:53 mark of the first period; however the Rangers would answer with Tyler Vanscourt scoring his first of the season from Scott Henegar and Collin Saint-Onge at 10:32.
North Iowa would score twice early in the second to take a 3 - 2 on a pair of goals by Markus Gander; only to see Marquette's Will Ford score his first on the year on a wrist shot that found its' way through Caspar with just over two and a half minutes remaining in the period.
The third period went scoreless, with Marquette being called for a roughing penalty with six seconds left in regulation. The Rangers were able to kill the shorthanded situation, setting up Kero's goal at 4:41.
Zac Enstrom and Lukas Hafner combined to stop 23 of 26 North Iowa shots on the night.
The same two teams will wrap up their series Saturday night at 7:30 at Lakeview Arena.
