Traverse City North Stars News Release
MARQUETTE - The North Stars raced to an early lead on Thursday night in Marquette, but it was the Rangers who had the last laugh, rallying from a 2-0 first period deficit and 3-2 late second period disadvantage to score a 4-3 win over Traverse City at Lakefront Arena.
Kyle Bonis scored his first Stars goal a mere 42 seconds into the contest, and red-hot Nate Urbaniak made it 2-0 on a short-handed effort with 6:01 to play before the first intermission. Ex-TC forward Aaron Pietila got the hosts on the board at 15:41 of the first, and Marquette evened things up just over minute later.
After Harrison Niemann put the visitors back in front with 4:36 left in the second stanza, Pietila struck again - this time on the power play - two and a half minutes later. Derek Grogan's power play tally 6:36 into the third was the difference-maker, but the North Stars did not go down easily, outshooting the Rangers by an eye- popping 27-9 margin over the final 20 minutes of action. TC owned a 48-32 edge in shots for the game. Matt Brooker stopped 45 of those Stars shots, while Brandon Stephenson made 28 saves for Traverse City.
Niemann finished with a pair of assists to go with his seventh goal of the season, while Urbaniak added a helper. Each player has collected nine points over their past four outings. Bonis, Alex Breeden and Jameson Raymond also collected assists for the Stars on Thursday.
Traverse City (9-9-4) will have the rest of the weekend off before hosting Alpena on Saturday, Dec. 8 at Centre ICE arena in a 7 p.m. affair.
