August 12, 2006 - North American Hockey League (NAHL)
Marquette Rangers News Release
Head Coach Leigh Mendelson and Assistant Coach Randy Enders continue to build the Rangers' team to compete for the Robertson Cup Championship.
Matt Tinordi, a forward from Millersville, MD, Matt Brooker, a goalie from Richmond, VA and Iiro Junnila, a defenseman from Rauma, Finland, recently joined the Rangers roster.
According to Coach Mendelson, "Matt Tinordi brings a great work ethic, good hockey sense and a physical element to the Rangers. As the season goes on, his offensive skills will emerge." Tinordi formerly played for the Washington Junior Nationals.
The second part of the goaltending tandem also joins us from the Washington Junior Nationals. "Matt Brooker is a young, athletic goaltender with a big upside. He will develop very well and learn quickly as Stephen Ritter's understudy." While playing for the Washington Jr. Capitols in 05-06, both Tinordi and Brooker were fortunate to be coached by Mark Tinordi, a 12-year veteran NHL player and All-Star.
As for the first of two import-players expected to be on the roster, Coach Mendelson states, "Iiro is a physical defenseman who comes from a very good program in Rauma, on the west coast of Finland. With his size and strength, we are looking forward to his contributions on both sides of the ice."
The 2006/07 season begins with the Rangers Tailgate Party for the team and public (Aug. 23 at Lakeview Arena, 5 p.m..) The home-opener is scheduled for September 23 during a break in the Electrician's Fall Classic Hockey Tournament. The Hanson Brothers arrive in Marquette October 7, with the balance of the game highlights to include Charity Jersey game nights, tailgate parties, over-time celebrations and apparel giveaways. A new addition to the Rangers games is a fan-participation Sumo Tournament, to be held throughout the season. Additionally, the Rangers will host "Save a Buck" night, a visit by Santa and the Grinch, and "A Soldier's Christmas" events. Families will be the focus of the Rangers' on Sunday games, where children will enjoy skating with the Rangers, face-painting and a Kid's Score Zone.
