Marquette Rangers News Release
Blaine, Minn. - The Wenatchee (Wash.) Wild scored twice in the second period Thursday morning at the North American Hockey League Showcase and never looked back winning 3-1 over the Marquette Rangers.
After a scoreless first period, in which the Wild outshot the Rangers 15-5, Wenatchee tallied a power play goal by Adam McKenzie to take a 1-0 lead at the 1:56 mark of the second period. The unassisted effort came after the Rangers Collin Saint-Onge was sent off for a hooking penalty just 34 seconds into the second frame.
Another power play goal, this one by Wenatchee's Jeff Jubenville at 12:01, would serve as the eventual game winner for the second year NAHL franchise.
Marquette's Andrew Kolb (Toledo, Ohio) would get the Rangers within a goal in the third period on an even-strength goal at 1:11 with the helpers going to Bobby Bodette and Brent Bain. Despite added pressure in the third period by the Rangers it would be the only puck to get past Wenatchee goaltender Mac Carruth.
For Kolb, a first year Ranger, it was his second goal in as many games for Marquette at the NAHL Showcase.
Carruth finished the day with 31 saves on 32 Marquette shots, the Rangers Kevin Kissaw took the loss stopping 34 of 36 shots by the Wild.
Wenatchee, 4-0-0 on the season, added an empty-net goal with eight seconds left to ice the victory.
The Rangers (1-1) now face the Wichita Falls Wildcats Friday afternoon at 2:45 Eastern time before wrapping up the NAHL Showcase against Kenai River (Ala.) Saturday at 10:00.
Friday's game will mark the third straight year the Wildcats and the Rangers have squared off at the annual event and are 1-1 against one another over that time.
Saturday will make the second time in three seasons that Marquette will play Kenai River at the Showcase event. Marquette won the first meeting in 2007, which was the Brown Bears' inaugural NAHL season.
