
Rangers cough up lead, lose

Traverse City - The Marquette Rangers Tier II Junior A hockey team gave up three goals in the final 6 and a half minutes at Centre Ice Arena in Traverse City; losing to the North Stars 3-2 in North American Hockey League action.
With the loss, Marquette remains one point behind Alpena in the NAHL North Division race with 38 points; the Rangers and Alpena will play three games this coming weekend.
Jimmy Gallagher opened the scoring for the Rangers in the first period beating Traverse City Goaltender CJ Motte at 14:19 of the first period. Chad Pietilla and Reed Rushing assisted on the 14th goal of the year for the Marquette native.
Marquette would make it 2-0 in the second on an unassisted effort by Rangers defenseman Ryan McGrath who was able to beat Motte with 5:17 remaining in the period.
Dan Sullivan's shutout bid collapsed starting at 13:39 of the third when Traverse City began their assault on the Rangers net. Nate Urbiniak made it 2-1 from Kyle Bonis and Chris Heineman; followed by the equalizer at 18:09 on an unassisted effort by Bonis. The game-winner would come fifty seconds later when Urbaniak scored his second of the game from Bonis and Garrett Thompson.
Neither team was able to score with the man advantage with Traverse City going 0 for 8 with the power play; Marquette went 0 for 16 with the extra attacker.
Sullivan stopped 12 of the 15 North Stars shots he faced on the night, while Motte made 25 saves on 27 Marquette efforts on the evening.
The Rangers will play at home this Friday against the Alpena IceDiggers before heading to Alpena for two games Saturday and Sunday.
