Rangers Beat Alpena

Alpena - It was a typical night with the Marquette Rangers and the Alpena IceDiggers Friday evening at Northern Lights Arena in Alpena.

The two North American Hockey League North Division teams fought to a one-goal game, went back-and-forth in scoring, and squared-off in a four-on-four brawl in the second period which resulted in two game ejections and 20 minutes of penalty time per side.

In the end, with was the Rangers holding on for a 3 - 2 win to stay one point ahead of Traverse City for the top spot in the NAHL North.

The Rangers opened the scoring at 15:56 of the first period when former Hancock High School standout Tanner Kero beat IceDigger goaltender Marcus Wieser with the assists to Collin Saint-Onge and defenseman Kevin Gibson. It was Kero's fifth goal of the season.

Alpena would answer the bell midway through the second period, and eventually take a one goal lead on back-to-back goals by Jimmy McCusker and Sam Cheraso. It appeared that lead would hold into intermission until Brent Bain (Toledo, Ohio) scored his fourth goal of the year with 1:29 remaining in the period to even the game at two goals apiece.

Josh Bussell and Gibson assisted on the goal, Bain's fourth of the season.

Marquette scored the eventual game winner just eighteen seconds into the third period when Bussell scored his second of the year on the power play, Bain and Carter Foguth assisted on the marker to boost the Rangers season record to 9 - 2 heading into Saturday night's "Paint the Rink Pink" game to benefit the Cancer Center at Marquette General Health Systems.

Wieser finished the night with 16 saves on 19 Marquette shots, the Rangers Kevin Kissaw made 27 saves on 29 attempts by the IceDiggers.
