Rancho Cucamonga Quakes News Release

San Bernardino, CA - Inland Empire starter Lay Batista dominated the Rancho offense over eight scoreless innings, as the 66ers shut out the Quakes on Tuesday night, taking two of three in the series with a 2-0 win at San Manuel Stadium.

Rancho had a pair of singles in the second inning, but couldn't muster a single hit over the next seven innings, with Batista (2-4) retiring 18 in a row at one point.

Former Quake Ryan Chaffee walked a pair of hitters in the ninth, as despite the offensive struggles, the Quakes made it interesting. With the tying runs aboard though, Chaffee got Austin Gallagher to ground out to first, then got C.J. Retherford to gently line out to center, picking up his seventh save and preserving the shutout.

Inland Empire got a run in the first inning off of Quakes' starter Chris Reed, making his first start in nearly a month. Reed gave up a two-out single to Taylor Lindsey, which brought home Brennan Gowens for a 1-0 Inland Empire lead.

With Reed (1-4) on a limited pitch count, Freddie Cabrera came on in relief in the fourth and worked a scoreless inning. In the fifth though, Cabrera gave up a run, as Travis Witherspoon tripled to open the inning, then scored on a Brian Hernandez RBI single, making it 2-0.

That rounded out the scoring as the Quakes only had five total base-runners on the night, as they were held to a season-low two hits.

Rancho will take a day off on Wednesday, then travel to Lake Elsinore on Thursday to open a three-game set against the Storm. Angel Sanchez (3-2) will open the series for the Quakes, while the Cal League's only seven-game winner, Donn Roach (7-0) will take the ball for the Storm. Game time on Thursday will be 7:05pm.

On Sunday, May 27th, the Quakes return to The Epicenter, hosting Modesto and Lake Elsinore in a six-game home stand. Tickets are available by calling 909-481-5000 or online at rcquakes.com. Go Quakes!
