Grand Rapids Rampage News Release
GRAND RAPIDS - After dropping their second straight game last Thursday, the Grand Rapids Rampage released quarterback Matthew Sauk (Sandy, Utah) today. The Rampage began the season with a 1-2 record under Sauk, including recent home losses to Las Vegas and Philadelphia.
Sauk played in all three games for the Rampage this season, including starting the last two. Over that span he completed 58 of 102 pass attempts for 686 yards, 12 touchdowns and four interceptions. Sauk took over the starting position after game-one starter Chad Salisbury (Perryopolis, Pa.) was knocked out of Grand Rapids' road contest against the Colorado Crush with a concussion.
"As a team, we're always looking for natural progression," said Sparky McEwen, Rampage head coach and director of football operations. "Our expectations were pretty high on Matt to help us get better last week, but we actually took a step back. His performance (22-of-40, 225 yards, three touchdowns, two interceptions) made it clear that we needed to move forward."
Last week, Grand Rapids acquired 1998 Heisman Trophy runner-up and former Rampage quarterback Michael Bishop (Willis, Texas) in a trade with the Kansas City Brigade. He relieved Sauk in the fourth quarter of last Thursday's 40-69 loss to Philadelphia, going 5-of-8 for 51 yards and a touchdown. The Rampage also signed quarterback Mark Radlinski (Grand Rapids, Mich.) to their active roster today. The former arenafootball2 signal caller took part in Grand Rapids' training camp in February and has been a member of the team's practice squad.
Meanwhile, Salisbury will be eligible to return from the injured reserve list for the Rampage's April 7 home game against the New York Dragons. Grand Rapids travels this week to take on the Utah Blaze on Friday (March 23) at 9:00 p.m. EDT.
