Grand Rapids Rampage News Release
In the first week of the MHSAA football season, Coopersville's Garrison Jewett started off the season with a receiving score and an 82-yard fumble recovery en route to Grand Rapids Rampage High School Ironman of the Week honors.
Last Friday night, he made it a repeat performance after lifting the Broncos to a 33-18 win over Calvin Christian and securing a playoff berth at 5-0. Jewett again nabbed two touchdowns, the first on the game's first possession, a 14-yard passing strike from QB Steve Veldman that gave Coopersville a lead they would not relinquish. Later in the half, a blitzing Jewett stripped Squires QB Jonathan Oosterbaan of the football and returned it 90 yards for a 21-0 lead.
He joins Hamilton's Dustin Smith as the only repeat Ironman winners. Coopersville and Hamilton will face each other this week in a battle that will most likely decide the O-K Blue championship.
At the end of the high school season a player will be selected as the "Grand Rapids Rampage High School Ironman of the Year" and will be awarded a trophy at a Rampage game to be determined later. The qualifications will be contingent upon who had the best offensive and defensive season. Special teams will also be taken into consideration.
PREVIOUS WEEKLY WINNERS
Garrison Jewett, Coopersville -- Ironman of the Week for August 28-30
Coopersville began the prep season with a win, thanks in large part to a great performance by receiver Garrison Jewett. He got the Broncos off to a fast start in the first quarter when his 27-yard touchdown catch gave Coopersville the lead over host Sparta. He added two more receptions in the game and finished the night with 75 yards receiving. Jewett also got into the scoring act in the third quarter when he returned a Sparta fumble 82 yards for the Broncos' final touchdown in the 27-14 victory.
Justin Hoskins, Creston -- Ironman of the Week for September 5-6
Hoskins made two huge plays for Creston as they traveled to Lansing and defeated host Sexton 34-26. It appeared as though the visiting Polar Bears would coast to an easy win when Hoskins picked off a pass and returned it 57 yards for a score and a 20-0 Creston lead. Sexton's offense, however, got on track and Creston would need Hoskins' skills on the offensive side of the ball as well. The senior stand out scored Creston's second touchdown of the third quarter on a 52-yard scamper that put the game away. He finished the night with 127 rushing yards as the team grabbed a big non-conference win before beginning their defense of the City League championship.
Dustin Smith, Hamilton -- Ironman of the Week for September 12-13
During the first two weekends of the prep football season, the Hamilton Hawkeyes exploded for 83 points. The Squires of Calvin Christian broke down the offensive machine and held the Hamilton offense scoreless. Fortunately for the Hawkeyes, senior Dustin Smith found other ways to score. Smith put Hamilton on the board for the first time in the third quarter when he returned a Calvin Christian kickoff 85 yards for a touchdown and cut the Squires' lead to 12-7. Later, with 10:39 remaining in the game, Smith worked his magic from the defensive side of the ball. He picked off a pass deep in Calvin Christian territory and returned it 12 yards for the decisive score in a 15-12 victory. The win improved Hamilton to 3-0 on the season. In addition to his ninth and tenth touchdowns on the season, Smith also totaled three interceptions.
Dustin Smith, Hamilton - Ironman of the Week for September 19-20
Smith is the first area athlete to claim the award in back-to-back weeks. Smith scored in all three phases of the game as Hamilton cruised to a 35-14 win over conference rival Rogers. He rushed for 67 yards on 12 carries including a 6-yard touchdown scamper. Smith's 86-yard kickoff return for a touchdown began the contest, and he capped off his trio of scores with an 18-yard interception return - Smith's thirteenth touchdown of the season. More importantly, the win improves Hamilton to a perfect 4-0.
