Grand Rapids Rampage News Release
NASHVILLE -- In an emotional defensive battle that featured seven turnovers, the Rampage lost 47-31 to the Nashville Kats in front of 11,113 at the Gaylord Entertainment Center.
Grand Rapids' defense intercepted Nashville quarterback Clint Stoerner three times and allowed just 156 passing yards, which ranks as third least in team history. Off those three takeaways, the Rampage offense could only muster a Peter Martinez 31-yard field goal against the AFL's most stingy defense.
The Rampage out gained the Kats in total yards (257-199), pass yards (246-156), total plays (58-30), first downs (20-14) and time of possession (38:17-21:43). However, the Kats stopped the Rampage from scoring on seven drives by forcing two interceptions, two fumbles, two turnovers on downs and a missed field goal.
Rampage WR/DB Timon Marshall recorded his first career 100-yard receiving game after grabbing ten balls for 104 yards and a touchdown. He also added his first career interception along with six kickoff returns for 91 yards. Overall, Marshall tallied his second straight 200-yard all-purpose game (104 receiving, 91 returns and six from the interception).
On the final play of the first half, the Kats attempted a 42-yard field goal that hit the top of the metal of the net structure with Marshall grabbing it on a bounce and was on his way for a Rampage touchdown and a potential 24-21 lead. However, an official blew the play dead as Marshall passed the Rampage ten-yard line. It was ruled that the ball hit the cables holding the net structure though on replays it did not appear to touch any of the cabling.
Mike Lawson and Aaron Bailey suffered injuries early in the third quarter. Both were sent to Baptist Hospital for precautionary measures and have been released and will make the trip back to Grand Rapids on Sunday morning.
Lawson injured his hip on the opening kickoff of the third quarter. On the Rampage's first offensive series of the second half, Bailey was knocked into the boards head first and left the game with neck pain.
With Lawson and Bailey out of the contest, the Rampage were limited on how they could match up with the Kats due to the AFL's substitution rules which caused mismatches on both sides of the ball. As a result, the Rampage scored just twice in the second half on two Anthony Hines touchdown runs. The Kats scored 26 points, intercepted a Salisbury pass and stopped the Rampage on a goal-line stand.
Grand Rapids continues its three-game road trip next Sunday, March 5 when it visits the defending ArenaBowl champion Colorado Crush. Kickoff is set for 1:00 p.m. and can be heard live on WBFX 101.3 FM with Joe Parson calling all the action.
