February 12, 2006 - Arena Football League (1987-2008) (AFL I)
Grand Rapids Rampage News Release
The Grand Rapids Rampage had four sacks defensively and forced four turnovers that resulted in 21 points en route to defeating the Los Angeles Avengers 66-41 Sunday afternoon on Centennial Wireless Field at Van Andel Arena. Chad Salisbury became just the fourth quarterback in team history to win his first start with the club. Grand Rapids' 25-point win is the fifth-largest margin of victory in franchise history. With the win, the Rampage also became just the ninth team in AFL history to record 50 regular season victories.
It took Salisbury, the Offensive Player of the Game, just two plays to put the Rampage on the board when he connected with Ironman of the Game Timon Marshall on a 37-yard score. Salisbury completed 16-of-21 passes for 177 yards with six touchdown strikes and an interception. On the ensuing kickoff, Chris Ryan stripped the ball from Anthony Derricks and recovered it on the Avengers' nine-yard line. Three plays later, Salisbury connected with Aaron Bailey from seven-yards out. The Rampage went up 21-0 after a turnover on downs by Los Angeles and the ensuing three-yard rushing score by Ryan.
Los Angeles got on the board for the first time six seconds into the second quarter when backup quarterback Brian Mann connected with Kevin Ingram on a 31-yard scoring strike and came within eight points of the Rampage with 1:51 to go in the game before Grand Rapids scored 17 points in a 25-second stretch. First Peter Martinez hit a 21-yard field goal to put the Rampage up by eleven. Then on the ensuing kickoff, former Avenger Jerome Riley scooped up a loose ball off the nets and pushed his way in for a touchdown. Anthony Hines returned an interception for a touchdown with 17 seconds left to close out the scoring.
Johnnie Harris earned ADT Defensive Player of the Game honors after intercepting a pass, breaking up two passes and posting a career-high 10.0 stops. Winfield Garnett registered a career-high 2.0 sacks. Tim Martin added a sack and a blocked field goal. Bryant Shaw accounted for the Rampage's other sack. Anthony Hines ended the game with three total touchdowns (two receiving, one on an interception return). Aaron Bailey and Timon Marshall also had two-touchdown performances. Also, Chris Avery became the Rampage's all-time leader in games played with 66 regular season contests passing a tie with Corey Mayfield.
The Rampage (1-2) host the San Jose SaberCats next Sunday, February 19 on Centennial Wireless Field at Van Andel Arena. Kickoff is slated for 2:00 p.m.
