RailCats nickel and dime Flyers

Schaumburg Flyers News Release

GARY, IN - The RailCats banged out ten hits - nine of them singles - and the Flyers stranded nine runners, falling 9-3 in the first of four against Gary Monday at the U.S. Steel Yard.

Schaumburg used some sloppy RailCat defense to take a first inning lead. Antoan Richardson reached on a throwing error to lead things off, and after Gary starter Derell McCall walked Travis Brown, Jose Valdez reached on Mike Rohde's second throwing error of the frame to load the bases. Victor Ferrante then scored Richardson on a sacrifice fly, and Jeff Dunbar brought home Brown on a groundout to put the Flyers in front 2-0.

Gary wasted no time in responding. After a leadoff single from Mike Massaro, Flyers starter Dustin Glant hit Jordan Czarniecki. Massaro and Czarniecki would come home to score on singles from Steve Haake and Rohde to even it at 2-2.

Glant then retired the next ten RailCats hitters before walking Chris Carrara to lead things off in the bottom of the fifth with the game still tied at 2-2. After sitting down Rob Marconi, Glant then gave up an RBI triple to Massaro. Czarniecki singled to bring home Massaro, and after Eric McNamee was hit by a pitch, Haake drove home two more with a single to make it 6-2.

Lyndon Poole and Craig Maddox started the sixth off with back-to-back singles, and Poole scored on a Tony Mansolino single to make it 6-3.

Gary added two more in the sixth on a McNamee single, and one more in the seventh on Carrara single.

The Flyers suffered from inning-ending double plays in the second, fifth, and sixth.

Massaro and Haake each had two hits for Gary, while Craig Maddox and Mercado led the Flyers charge with two hits a piece as well.

Glant (5-5) takes to loss, allowing six runs (five earned) on five hits over 4.1. McCall improves to 3-0, allowing three runs (one earned) on seven hits through 5.1 of work.

LHP Alain Quijano (3-3, 5.23) will take the mound tomorrow for the Flyers against Gary RHP Chris Jones (5-2, 3.29) with the first pitch being thrown at 7:00.
