Lakeland Raiders News Release

The start of this week's matchup in Lakeland between the Lakeland Raiders and Eastern Kentucky Drillers looked a lot like a continuation of last week's matchup in Kentucky between the same two teams. The Drillers jumped out to a quick 14-0 lead while the Raiders' first three drives ended in interceptions.

The Raiders mounted a furious comeback fueled by - as unlikely as it may seem - an authoritative tackle by kicker Jesus "Jesse" Cortez after a blocked extra point attempt. The Raiders never held a lead in the game until there were just 16.9 seconds left on the clock. But when the final whistle blew, the Raiders were on top of a 51-44 final score.

Drillers QB Kevin Brown threw for five touchdowns and ran for another in the losing effort. Raiders QB Peejay Jack threw only one touchdown pass all night, but he ran another in himself. Lakeland RB Travis Anderson, who was leading the league in rushing touchdowns until he was sidelined by injury, picked up where he left off with three rushing TDs. WR/DB Chuck Walker capped the scoring with two spectacular kickoff returns for touchdowns.

WIth the seeding all but set for the Southern Conference, there is a good chance that these two teams will meet in the post season for a rubber match in Kentucky. The Drillers hold a half game lead over the Raiders and control their own destiny for the #2 seed in the South. The Raiders are currently in third place in the South with only one game remaining on the regular season schedule.
