Radio-Canada Olympic Bursary awarded to six QMJHL players

BOUCHERVILLE, Thursday, June 1, 2006 (QMJHL) - Over the past few weeks, the Radio-Canada Olympic Bursary has been awarded to a total of six Quebec Major Junior Hockey League players. The bursary is handed out to one student-athlete of each establishment member of the École Sport-Études program. Each bursary is worth $500. The recipients are:

Alexandre Picard-Hooper, the captain of the Baie-Comeau Drakkar, who is currently completing his degree in human sciences. He has maintained grades superior to class averages in every one of his courses. Also, his overall average is above 80%. On the ice, Alexandre has been solid, registering a 100 point season with 57 goals and 43 assists in 70 games.

François Bolduc of the Rimouski Océanic is currently pursuing a degree in applied sciences. His efforts have enabled him to surpass the class averages in most of his courses. François is regarded as a leader in the dressing room. He registered 5 goals and 17 assists along with 270 bodychecks over the course of the season.

Guillaume Doucet of the Rouyn-Noranda Huskies is completing his college diploma in human sciences. He wishes to pursue his studies in administration at the University level in the near future. Also, Guillaume is very active in the community, volunteering to raise funds for the local hospital as well as for la maison des jeunes in Rouyn-Noranda. This season, he was a key contributor for the Huskies on the ice, collecting 22 goals and 36 helpers.

Nicolas Lafontaine of the Chicoutimi Saguenéens is completing his collegiate studies in applied sciences. His overall academic average is superior to 80%. A fast and physical defensive-minded player, Nicolas is utilized generally in short-handed situations. He will pursue his hockey career next season at Concordia University and work towards a degree in actuarial studies.

Patrick Simard of the Victoriaville Tigres is presently studying in human sciences. He wishes to pursue a career in physical education. He has not missed the playoffs in the three years he's played in the major junior hockey circuit.

Pierre-Marc Guilbault of the Shawinigan Cataractes is in his last semester in applied sciences. He will have completed the three-year program in as many years, a substantial achievement considering the arduous schedule QMJHL players face. Next autumn, he will begin a bachelor's degree in engineering. This season, he won both the QMJHL and CHL scholastic player of the year awards. He was also a solid contributor on the ice, registering 15 goals and 48 assists in 68 games for the Cataractes.

La Société Radio-Canada is proud of its seven year association with Fondation Sport-Études and continues to encourage the remarkable efforts of young athletes thanks to the Olympic Bursary program, which hands-out a total of 25 bursaries worth $500 every year.
