March 2, 2012 - Prospect League (Prospect)
Quincy Gems News Release
Quincy Gems plan to continue in their championship style for 2012 season, and ready to defend their 2011 Prospect League Championship. The Quincy Gems bring their winning tradition back to QU Stadium this season with league titles in the CICL League in 1996,1998 and 2005, along with two out of three Prospect League championships in 2009 and 2011. The six CICL league teams merged with 5 teams in the East in 2009 to form the Prospect League, which has become one of the premiere summer colligate wood bat leagues in the USA. Quincy Gems were ranked 4th in the nation last summer by Perfect Game, the world's largest amateur baseball scouting service.
Quincy Gems are excited to defend their rein on the "The Battle For The Paddle" against archrival Hannibal Cavemen. Quincy has taken the paddle home each of the three years the two teams have been playing for the prestigious paddle. These two Mississippi river town teams will square up 12 times this summer in the heated rivalry.
The Prospect League has expanded the league schedule from 54 to 60 games for the 2012 season. The Quincy Gems will also play two additional exhibition games, one against the Quincy American Legion team on Monday, May 28th, and bringing the most exciting patriotic exhibition in the world, US Military All Star team to town on Monday, July 2nd. The US Military team was formed at the request of President H.W. Busch in 1990. The are bringing their world famous "Red, White, & Blue Tour" featuring the only "joint" Armed Forces and First Responders who participate while off duty to support our brave men and women oversees. The majority have deployed in direct support on the Global War on Terrorism. They have earned a reputation as the "Globetrotters of Baseball" performing in 45 states, and 12 countries. They have played against the Yankees, Phillies, Cubs, Brewers and hundreds of minor league and colligate teams across the country. Bringing the caliber of this type of patriotic experience to Quincy is no small task, and special thanks go out to Mercantile Bank and Cell Tech as corporate sponsors and T&C Inn and Suites as the Hotel sponsor.
Rob Ebbing, Executive Director of Quincy Gems is pleased to announce that Dave Comer "Chickenman" is back with the Gems for his 6th season after his battle with cancer. The Gems have also brought Terry Martin on board as their new General Manager. Coach Chris Martin will be returning as Field Manager, for his sixth season as a highly respected Prospect League veteran coach and one of the most successful coaches the league has seen! Coach Ryan Oden from the Gem's 2009 league championship team will be returning for the 2012 season. Together they have assembled another team based on pitching, hitting and speed. With this combination they are ready to defend their championship and take on whatever the rest of the league might throw at us!
