Quest for beer continues

October 19, 2006 - North American Hockey League (NAHL)
Topeka Pilots News Release

The recent denial of the Santa Fe Roadrunners request to allow restricted and secure beer sales during their home games has spawned a large amount of dialogue in the city, as well as throughout the hockey community. The team has posted an Online Petition http://www.petitiononline.com/sfrr2006/petiti on.html for people to voice their opinion and to gauge the public interest in continuing to battle the shortsighted and arrogant Santa Fe City Council. Please take a look at the petition, and if you feel so inclined, add your name and comment to the list. You can see who has signed before you, and some of the comments others have made. Of particular interest are the comments made by City Councilor Matthew Ortiz. He was quoted in the Albuquerque Journal, saying, "Basketball is a real sport, and hockey is for... I don't know what hockey is for." He recanted his statement somewhat during the session. According to the next morning's Journal, Ortiz "has learned since that hockey players are "every bit as passionate" about their sport as are other athletes." He also stated in session that "90 to 95% of the youth hockey parents that wrote to him were not in favor of the approval of beer sales". This petition hopes to challenge that. Is the sale of beer going to magically double the Roadrunners attendance? Probably not, but it will be a big step in creating a legitimate hockey atmosphere. Thanks to all who have given their thought and consideration to this matter. And by the way, if you feel so inclined, let Councilor Ortiz know that he is not as "in-touch" with his constituents as he might like to think he is: mailto:meortiz @santafenm.gov To the Roadrunners faithful..... CHEERS!!
