Quakes Fall to Modesto 6-3

Rancho Cucamonga, CA- The Modesto Nuts jumped out in front of the Quakes in a big way on Wednesday night as they scored five runs against starter Mike Kenney. The Nuts scored on an RBI single by Jay Cox, a two run single by Scott Beerer and a two-run home run by Jason Van Kooten to grab a five run lead. Kenney allowed the first 8 batters of the inning to reach safely, seven on hits, before getting a fly out and a ground out to end the inning with a 5-0 deficit.

The Quakes got on the scoreboard in the 3rd as Andrew Romine singled to lead off the inning and scored from second on a one-out RBI single by Hector Estrella to make the score 5-1.

Modesto came right on back in the 4th against Kenney scoring a run on a solo homer by Charlie Blackmon to bring the lead back to five, 6-1.

Rancho got that run back in the 5th as Romine led off with a single to left and scored on a Hector Estrella RBI double to right field to make the score 6-2.

Mike Kenney wound up lasting five innings, allowing six runs on a season high 12 hits, while striking out three. Steven Geltz was great out of the bullpen, allowing just two hits in three shutout innings, while striking out three. Jeremy Haynes pitched a scoreless 9th to keep the Quakes within reach.

The Quakes got a run in the 9th with two outs as Jake Rife was hit by a pitch and was in motion on Alberto Rosario's single to right to make the score 6-3.

The Quakes finish their series at home against Modesto on Thursday. Right hander Ryan Brasier will start for the Quakes against left hander Christian Friedrich for the Nuts. Game time is scheduled for 7:05pm.
