Rancho Cucamonga Quakes News Release

Lancaster, CA- While early offense was a theme in the first two games, the third game of the series between Rancho Cucamonga and Lancaster was a different story. The Quakes came back late to win a pitchers' duel 2-1 on Wednesday night at The Hangar.

Caleb Ferguson started for the Quakes and struggled with his command early. He ended up walking five and hitting a batter in his third start of the year, receiving a no-decision.

The scoring started in the second for the JetHawks when Ferguson continued his poor control and bounced a curveball that leaked back to the backstop, allowing Mylz Jones to score from third.

The offense was non-existent during the next four innings. The two teams combined for just six base-runners during that stretch of the game.

That all changed in the seventh when Will Smith took the first pitch he saw to lead off the inning and took it deep to left-center to tie the game. Two batters later, Ariel Sandoval cracked a wind-aided home run to center to give the Quakes the lead 2-1.

Tony Gonsolin (1-0) stole the show out of the bullpen as he earned the win in his first appearance in a Quakes uniform. After entering in the bottom of the fourth with two outs and giving up a single, he retired 10 in a row in the next three innings with three strikeouts.

Shea Spitzbarth was brilliant in relief during the eighth and ninth innings. He struck out four total in-route to his third save of the season.

The Quakes only managed six hits on the offensive side, but held the JetHawks to just two. Smith was the only player with a multi-hit game. Along with the home run, he added a second inning double and a ninth inning single.

For the JetHawks, starter Peter Lambert was strong through six shutout innings, but Max Schuh (0-2) gave up the two home runs and received the loss.

Tomorrow, the Quakes (7-6) and JetHawks (5-8) will match-up for the series finale at 6:35 PM. Rancho will send right-hander Dennis Santana to the mound and Lancaster will counter with righty Carlos Polanco.

The next home game at LoanMart Field is on Friday, April 21 against Inland Empire. It will be Family RV $1 Family Feast Night. Tickets are available by calling (909) 481-5000 or online at rcquakes.com. Go Quakes!
