Quad City grabs top spot in Week 1 Coaches' Poll

March 31, 2004 - arenafootball2 (af2) News Release

CHICAGO - By a margin of only one point, the Quad City Steamwheelers have topped the Tennessee Valley Vipers for the No. 1 spot in the Week 1 Coaches' Poll, the League office announced today.

With four teams in regular season action last weekend and all other teams making their final roster cuts and participating in scrimmages or preseason games, there was some shuffling throughout the Top 12 list. The Steamwheelers earned 224 total points to Tennessee Valley's 223 to earn the No. 1 ranking, but the Vipers received eight first-place votes compared to five for the Steamwheelers. The Vipers and Steamwheelers meet on April 17.

With a 68-35 win over Central Valley last Saturday night, the Hawaiian Islanders moved from fifth to third in this week's poll, while the Bossier-Shreveport Battle Wings cracked into the 12th spot with the 63-41 win over Birmingham. The entire Week 1 Coaches' Poll is listed below. The number in parentheses indicates the number of first place votes the team received.

Each week during the season af2 coaches vote for the Top 12 teams in the league by ranking them one through 12 on a ballot. Teams ranked first receive 12 points with the point value decreasing by one for each place below first, meaning a team ranked 12th receives one point. Total points determine the Top 12 list. In the event of a tie in total points, the team with the greater number of first-place votes is ranked higher. The af2 Coaches' Poll is announced every Wednesday during the regular season. Coaches are not allowed to vote for their own team and the poll results have no bearing on postseason qualification.
