QMJHL Weekend Preview
February 3, 2011 - Quebec Maritimes Junior Hockey League (QMJHL)
Lewiston MAINEiacs News Release
Lewiston, ME (QMJHL) - Since the start of 2011, the Lewiston MAINEiacs have made it a point to make the Androscoggin Bank Colisee a challenging place to play for opposing teams. Thanks to three straight wins on the current homestand, the MAINEiacs are now 7-0 on home ice in the new year, outscoring the opposition 42-14. The most recent home victory came on Tuesday night, when Lewiston doubled up Shawinigan 4-2. Cole Hawes and Kirill Kabanov staked the MAINEiacs to an early 2-0 lead, before the Cataractes responded with two quick goals to tie the score. However, Lewiston had the final say, thanks to goals by Ian Saab and Michael Chaput. Andrey Makarov preserved the win with 37 saves on 39 shots.
The MAINEiacs now have a record of 34-16-0-2 (70 points), which remains good for second place in the Telus East Division. Quebec currently leads the division by seven points with two head-to-head games coming up next weekend. Overall, Lewiston is currently in fifth place, trailing Drummondville by just one point for fourth. The MAINEiacs have the edge over the Voltigeurs in wins, while both teams have played the same amount of games. Meanwhile, Lewiston has opened up a three-point lead on both Acadie-Bathurst and Gatineau, as well as a five-point lead on Shawinigan.
This weekend will feature only one game on the MAINEiacs' schedule, as they will welcome the Cape Breton Screaming Eagles to the Androscoggin Bank Colisee on Saturday night. Cape Breton has struggled this season, posting a record of 15-33-1-2 (33 points) thus far. Despite the struggles, the Screaming Eagles have a ten-point lead over the Baie-Comeau Drakkar for the final playoff spot in the league. Lewiston and Cape Breton have met up once this season, with the MAINEiacs squeaking out a 2-1 overtime win at Centre 200, despite outshooting the Screaming Eagles 51-11.

This Weekend in the Telus East Division
The Quebec Remparts are at home for a pair of games this weekend, with both contests taking place against teams at or near the top of the Telus West Division. On Friday night, a pair of divisional leaders go head-to-head, as the Remparts will host the Montreal Junior. Then, on Saturday, the Gatineau Olympiques visit Colisee Pepsi, looking to end a four-game losing skid.
The Victoriaville Tigres will be hungry entering the weekend, after getting blanked 10-0 on home ice by the Quebec Remparts on Wednesday night. Victoriaville starts the weekend with a home game on Friday night against Cape Breton, before heading up to Chicoutimi for a tilt with the Sagueneens on Saturday.
The Rimouski Oceanic are beginning to slide, having dropped four games in a row, as well as seven of their last ten. A two-game weekend in Val-d'Or awaits the Oceanic, as they and the Foreurs will take the ice on Friday and Saturday. Val-d'Or has won two straight, after previously dropping seven in a row.
The Chicoutimi Sagueneens are knocking on Rimouski's door, trailing by just two points, as the Sagueneens have won three of their last four games. With the Oceanic on the road this weekend, Chicoutimi has a great opportunity to capitalize, as both of their games will take place at Centre Georges Vezina. On Thursday night, the Sagueneens will welcome the Rouyn-Noranda Huskies to town, before taking on Victoriaville in a divisional battle on Saturday.
The two worst teams in the QMJHL are set to meet up this weekend, as the Baie-Comeau Drakkar will host the Rouyn-Noranda Huskies for a pair of games on Friday and Saturday. Baie-Comeau currently leads Rouyn-Noranda by one point in the overall standings, but the Huskies have three games in hand.
Elsewhere in the QMJHL
The Cape Breton Screaming Eagles will have played plenty of hockey this week by the time they arrive in Lewiston on Saturday. The game against the MAINEiacs will be the final contest in a stretch of three games in three nights, that begins in Shawinigan on Thursday, and continues in Victoriaville on Friday.
The Cataractes will also be in action on Friday at Centre Bionest, as the Gatineau Olympiques will make a visit. Gatineau currently leads Shawinigan by two points for third place in the Telus West Division, but the Cataractes have two games in hand.
The Drummondville Voltigeurs are in second place in the Telus West Division, and are currently in the middle of a swing through the Maritimes Division. Drummondville lost the opening game of the trip 4-2 in Halifax on Wednesday night. The Voltigeurs will continue their voyage at PEI on Friday, before the final game against Acadie-Bathurst on Saturday.
There isn't much stopping the Saint John Sea Dogs these days, as the Sea Dogs are currently unbeaten in regulation in 14 straight games. They will look to continue that streak this weekend with a pair of road contests. On Friday night, the sixth game of the Rivalry Cup takes place, as Saint John visits Moncton. So far this season, the Sea Dogs have won all five games against their provincial rivals. Then, on Saturday, the scene shifts to Halifax, where Saint John will hit the ice against the Mooseheads.
The final two games in the league this weekend both involve the PEI Rocket on the road. Along with their home game against Drummondville on Friday, the Rocket will head to Acadie-Bathurst on Thursday and Moncton on Saturday.
