QMJHL Weekend Preview
December 31, 2010 - Quebec Maritimes Junior Hockey League (QMJHL)
Lewiston MAINEiacs News Release
Lewiston, ME (QMJHL) - The Lewiston MAINEiacs returned to action for a pair of games this week, after having eight days away from the rink to celebrate the holidays. The Victoriaville Tigres were the opponent for both contests, and the season series between the two clubs continues to be even and intriguing. Lewiston and Victoriaville have each won twice, with the two sides winning in their own unique way. The MAINEiacs have resorted to offense, lighting the lamp seven times in each of their two victories. Meanwhile, the Tigres have turned to their goaltenders, who have combined to allow just three goals on 77 shots in their two victories.
This past week, the road team got the upper hand in both tilts. On Tuesday, the MAINEiacs had ten different players find the scoresheet, with seven of those players recording multiple points, as Lewiston took out the Tigres 7-1 at Colisee Desjardins. Francis Beauvillier netted a pair of goals, while Pierre-Olivier Morin, Etienne Brodeur, Michael Chaput, Olivier Dame-Malka, and Stefan Fournier each found the back of the cage once. On Thursdy, Victoriaville and goaltender David Honzik responded. Honzik allowed a goal in the first period to Jess Tanguy, but was perfect from there, finishing the game with 32 saves. On the offensive side, the Tigres got three points from Philip-Michael Devos, as well as a pair of goals from Guillaume Goulet, as the visitors pulled away with a 4-1 win.
The 1-1 week leaves the MAINEiacs with a 25-14-0-2 record (52 points), which is still good for second place in the Telus East Division. The 52 points are also good for sixth place in the league. Fourth place Drummondville and their 55 points will be at the Androscoggin Bank Colisee on Tuesday, giving Lewiston a chance to close the gap.
The Voltigeurs will be without one of their top players on Tuesday, as forward Sean Couturier (the potential first overall pick at this coming summer's NHL Entry Draft) is currently playing for Team Canada at the World Junior Championship in Buffalo, NY. Leading scorer Ondrej Palat is also at the tournament, representing the Czech Republic. With those two out of the lineup, Drummondville will rely on veterans such as Marc-Olivier Vachon and Jonathan Brunelle to carry the load offensively. Jean-Philippe Mathieu and Andrew Randazzo are two players to watch on the blueline, while Guillaume Nadeau has shouldered most of the work between the pipes.
Lewiston and Drummondville have met once so far this season, with the MAINEiacs winning 5-4 in comeback fashion on October 29th at the Centre Marcel Dionne. Etienne Brodeur, Alex Zafiris, Michael Chaput, Francis Beauvillier, and Jess Tanguy had the goals for the visitors, while Nicholas Champion's 30 saves helped to secure the victory.

This Weekend in the QMJHL
This will be a quiet weekend around the QMJHL, as only two games will take place, and both will feature the same teams. It's a rematch of last season's President's Cup Final, as the Moncton Wildcats and Saint John Sea Dogs meet again, continuing their Maritimes Division rivalry. The first game takes place in Saint John on Friday, before the two clubs shift to Moncton on Sunday. So far this season, the Sea Dogs have won both of the prior contests, using lots of offense in the process. Saint John won 6-2 at home on October 8th, before winning a 9-7 slugfest on November 21st in Moncton.
