QMJHL Week in Review

February 14, 2011 - Quebec Maritimes Junior Hockey League (QMJHL)
Lewiston MAINEiacs News Release

Lewiston, ME (QMJHL) - A 68-game regular season features many ups and downs, and unfortunately for the Lewiston MAINEiacs, last week will be one to delete from the memory banks when thinking about the 2010-11 campaign. The MAINEiacs played three games last week against two of the league's elite teams, and while two of the contests were close, Lewiston came out on the short end of the scoreboard.

The week started early, as the MAINEiacs visited the Montreal Junior on Tuesday morning. Playing in their second morning tilt of the season, Montreal came ready, flying out of the gates with a 4-0 lead in the first period. Despite the early deficit, Lewiston came back to make the score close, as Kirill Kabanov, Pierre-Olivier Morin, and Etienne Brodeur all found the back of the net. The MAINEiacs nearly got the equalizer, but the Junior secured a 5-3 win with an empty net tally. Jean-Francois Berube had a clutch goaltending performance for Montreal with 31 saves.

Over the weekend, Lewiston returned home for a pair of games with the Quebec Remparts. Friday night's game was all Quebec, who used two goals in the first and second period, as well as three goals in the third for a 7-1 win. Etienne Brodeur's ninth shorthanded goal of the season was the lone bright spot for the MAINEiacs. On Saturday, the Remparts used three power play goals to take a 3-0 lead after two periods of play. Lewiston came back in the third with goals from Cameron Critchlow and Pierre-Olivier Morin, before Mikael Tam's second goal of the game finished off a 4-2 win for Quebec. Louis Domingue earned both wins for the Remparts, making a total of 59 saves on the weekend.

The MAINEiacs' record now sits at 35-19-0-2 (72 points), which remains good for second place in the Telus East Division. Quebec leads the division by eleven points, while Victoriaville is ten points back of Lewiston in third place. The overall standings are now closer than they have been all season, as fifth place and eighth place are separated by just one point. Shawinigan's 73 points place them in fifth, while Lewiston, Acadie-Bathurst, and Gatineau are locked in a three-way tie for sixth.

Notable Performances Last Week

55-D-Sam Carrier (2 assists, 2 points)

Last Week in the Telus East Division

The Quebec Remparts (40-12-1-2, 83 pts) have been one of the strongest home teams in the league this season, but it was their performance on the road last weekend that made the difference. In a battle for first place in the division, the Remparts won a pair of games against the MAINEiacs in Lewiston, taking a 7-1 decision on Friday, before a 4-2 victory on Saturday.

The Victoriaville Tigres (29-23-1-3, 62 pts) have played .500 hockey in their last ten games, and that continued last weekend, as the Tigres split a pair of games at Colisee Desjardins. Victoriaville started off by beating Halifax 5-3 on Saturday, before Shawinigan squeaked out a 4-3 victory on Sunday.

The Chicoutimi Sagueneens (23-23-4-6, 56 pts) have gone through a coaching change, and are currently one of the hotter teams in the league, having won seven of their last ten games. Chicoutimi got off to a slow start last week, falling 5-2 in Val-d'Or on Wednesday night. However, over the weekend, the Sagueneens traveled to Rouyn-Noranda, where they swept the Huskies 4-2 and 4-1.

The Rimouski Oceanic (26-28-1-1, 54 pts) put a six-game losing skid to bed last weekend, as they welcomed the Baie-Comeau Drakkar (9-39-5-4, 27 pts) to the Colisee de Rimouski for a couple of tilts. Rimouski blanked Baie-Comeau 3-0 on Friday night, then followed up their win by finishing Saturday afternoon on the right side of a 4-3 score.

Elsewhere in the QMJHL

The Moncton Wildcats were twenty minutes away from making the headlines on Sunday, as they led the Saint John Sea Dogs 2-0 after two periods of play. However, Saint John wasn't about to let the Wildcats ruin the party, scoring twice in the third, before two shootout tallies gave the Sea Dogs their 11th straight win, while keeping them unbeaten in regulation in 18 games in a row. Both Saint John and Moncton entered Sunday's game coming off of wins, as the Wildcats edged Cape Breton 3-2 on Wednesday, and the Sea Dogs beat PEI 4-1 on Friday.

The Drummondville Voltigeurs made a strong statement in the overall standings, picking up three wins to open up six and seven-point gaps respectively on the four-team cluster from fifth place through eighth place. Drummondville's biggest game came first, when they silenced a sellout crowd at Centre Bionest with a 4-3 win over Shawinigan. After that, the Voltigeurs returned home to Centre Marcel Dionne, where they knocked off Val-d'Or 4-3 in a shootout on Friday and Halifax 5-3 on Sunday.

The Gatineau Olympiques entered last week on a six-game skid, but turned things around with a pair of wins. Gatineau doubled up Halifax 4-2 on Friday, before shutting out Val-d'Or 3-0 on Saturday. The shutout was Maxime Clermont's fourth of the season, tying him with Drummondville's Guillaume Nadeau for the league lead in that category.

The Acadie-Bathurst Titan played three games away from home last week, as they faced the PEI Rocket and Cape Breton Screaming Eagles. The Titan only picked up one win in the stretch, winning the middle game 2-1 in a shootout against the Screaming Eagles on Friday. PEI edged Acadie-Bathurst 2-1 on Wednesday, and Cape Breton earned a 5-2 victory on Sunday.

The Montreal Junior were in action for three games last week as well, earning five out of six possible points. The Junior started with back-to-back home wins on consecutive days, knocking off Lewiston 5-3 on Tuesday and Halifax 2-1 on Wednesday. On Friday, Montreal came up short, losing 3-2 in a shootout at Shawinigan.
