Lewiston MAINEiacs News Release

Lewiston, ME (QMJHL) - After two straight years of clinching the playoffs on the final day of the regular season, the Lewiston MAINEiacs are taking a significantly less stressful approach in 2011. The MAINEiacs took the ice twice last week, posting a record of 1-1, while clinching their eighth consecutive playoff berth since becoming the lone QMJHL team in the United States. The weekend started with a tough 6-3 loss against the Acadie-Bathurst Titan - a game that saw Lewiston with leads of 2-0 and 3-1. One day later, the MAINEiacs got the two points they were looking for, as they picked up a 3-1 divisional win against the Rimouski Oceanic. Cameron Critchlow, Etienne Brodeur, Sam Carrier, Christophe Lalonde, Sam Henley, and Jess Tanguy were the six different goal scorers for the MAINEiacs.

Lewiston now owns a record of 31-16-0-2 (64 points), which is good for second place in the Telus East Division, as well as seventh in the overall standings. The MAINEiacs are within one point of both fifth and sixth overall (Acadie-Bathurst & Gatineau), while Drummondville sits four points ahead in fourth place.

Last Week in the Telus East Division

The Quebec Remparts (34-10-1-2, 71 pts) ran into a couple of challenging games last week, losing both of them. On Friday night, the Remparts lost an emotional 4-3 battle in Rimouski. Then, on Sunday, the league's top team invaded Colisee Pepsi and skated away with two points, as the Saint John Sea Dogs doubled up Quebec, 4-2.

The Victoriaville Tigres (26-19-1-3, 56 pts) played all three of their games on the road last week, and got two wins to show for it. After getting blanked 4-0 in Shawinigan on Tuesday, the Tigres traveled to Nova Scotia, where success was waiting for them. On Friday night, Victoriaville squeaked out a 5-4 shootout win over Halifax, before earning a more convincing 4-1 victory over Cape Breton on Sunday afternoon.

The Rimouski Oceanic (24-23-1-1, 50 pts) welcomed two divisional foes into the Colisee de Rimouski over the weekend. Rimouski's weekend started on a positive note, as the home team earned a 4-3 win over Quebec. However, the Lewiston MAINEiacs took care of their business on Sunday, setting the Oceanic back 3-1.

The Chicoutimi Sagueneens (16-21-4-6, 42 pts) were also home for a pair of games, but did not have as much success as their division rivals. On Friday night, Chicoutimi ran into the Shawinigan Cataractes, who earned their third of four straight wins with a 3-2 victory. Then, on Saturday, the Saint John Sea Dogs were looking to avenge a shootout loss at home from earlier in the season, and they did so, edging the Sagueneens 4-3 in overtime.

The Baie-Comeau Drakkar (7-33-5-4, 23 pts) faced the same two teams as Chicoutimi, but the downward spiral continued down the division, as the Drakkar came away empty handed. The Saint John Sea Dogs started their perfect road trip with a 3-2 win in Baie-Comeau on Friday, before the Shawinigan Cataractes took care of business with a 6-4 win on Saturday.

Elsewhere in the QMJHL

The Acadie-Bathurst Titan have been one of the hottest teams in the QMJHL as of late, and that continued last week, as the Titan extended their winning streak to eight games. Acadie-Bathurst started with back-to-back road games, using lots of offense in a 9-5 win over Moncton on Wednesday, before a more defensive approach in a 4-2 win over PEI on Thursday. On Saturday, the Titan completed their perfect weekend with a 6-3 comeback win over Lewiston.

After Wednesday's loss to the Titan, the Moncton Wildcats put together a solid weekend, picking up a pair of victories. On Friday night, the Wildcats knocked off Cape Breton 4-3, before earning a 5-4 road win against PEI on Sunday.

The Montreal Junior took care of business on home ice, winning both times they took the ice, extending their winning streak to five games. The Junior took out struggling Rouyn-Noranda 4-1 on Friday, leading to an intense divisional battle with Gatineau on Sunday. For the second time in five tries this season, Montreal got the upper hand, shutting out the Olympiques 2-0.

Oddly enough, Gatineau was involved with a shutout of their own, as they blanked Val-d'Or 6-0 on Saturday. That was one of two road losses on the weekend for the Foreurs, who fell 4-2 in Drummondville on Friday.

Two other games took place in the QMJHL last week, as PEI blasted Halifax 7-2, and Drummondville snuck past Rouyn-Noranda 3-2 in overtime.
