Lewiston MAINEiacs News Release

Lewiston, ME (QMJHL) - Last weekend, the Lewiston MAINEiacs embarked on a challenging road trip, as they played three games in three days against the Quebec Remparts and Shawinigan Cataractes. Lewiston played well on the trip, winning two of the three contests, while extending the team's winning streak to ten straight games, prior to Sunday's defeat in Quebec. On Friday, the MAINEiacs jumped out to an early 2-0 lead against the Remparts, before extending that lead to 4-1 after two periods of play. Quebec netted a pair of goals in the third, but the visitors kept the comeback at bay, holding on for a 4-3 victory. On Saturday in Shawinigan, the two teams exchanged goals at the end of the second and the beginning of the third, sending the tilt into overtime. At the 3:29 mark of the extra session, Olivier Dame-Malka buried the winning goal, lifting his club to a 2-1 win. Finally, on Sunday, the MAINEiacs dropped a 4-2 decision to the Remparts, as Quebec scored four consecutive goals in the first and second periods. The 2-1 weekend brings Lewiston's record to 18-8-0-2 (38 points). The MAINEiacs are currently in fourth place in the QMJHL, trailing Quebec and Saint John by two points, as well as Montreal by one point.

Last Week in the Telus East Division

The Quebec Remparts (19-5-0-2, 40 pts) picked up two wins in three games, and ended up needing both in order to maintain sole possession of first place in the Telus East Division. A 4-3 win by the MAINEiacs on Friday was sandwiched in between Quebec's 6-4 win over Gatineau on Thursday, as well as a 4-2 win over Lewiston on Sunday.

The Rimouski Oceanic (14-13-0-0, 28 pts) entered the weekend in fourth place, and exited the weekend in a tie for third. Rimouski got things started with a 5-4 win over Drummondville on Friday, helping to knock the Voltigeurs out of the division lead in the Telus West. Then, on Sunday, the Oceanic visited Victoriaville, where they tied the Tigres for third place with an 8-2 thumping at Colisee Desjardins.

The Victoriaville Tigres (13-12-1-1, 28 pts) picked up one point in two games, clinging to a tie for third place in the division. On Friday night, Victoriaville coughed up a 3-2 lead, before ultimately losing 4-3 in overtime at Shawinigan. Then, on Sunday, the Tigres were humiliated 8-2 by Rimouski on home ice.

The Chicoutimi Sagueneens (9-13-2-3, 23 pts) played a pair of home games, and came up empty in both. On Friday night, the Gatineau Olympiques visited the Centre Georges Vezina, and earned a 5-2 win over the Sagueneens. Then, on Sunday, Chicoutimi kept the contest close, but the Montreal Junior took over sole possession of first place in the Telus West Division with a 4-3 victory.

The worst winless streak in all of hockey has continued through another week, as the Baie-Comeau Drakkar (1-20-3-3, 8 pts) dropped two games at the Centre Henry Leonard. Montreal got the best of Baie-Comeau with a 3-1 win on Friday, before the Olympiques edged the Drakkar 3-2 on Sunday. Baie-Comeau still hasn't won since September 12th, falling in 25 consecutive games.

Elsewhere in the QMJHL

The Saint John Sea Dogs took the ice once last weekend, but judging by the goals scored, one would think they played at least two or three. The Moncton Wildcats jumped out to a 4-0 lead, before Saint John answered with seven straight goals for a 7-4 lead. The two clubs exchanged goals at the end, with the Sea Dogs holding on for a 9-7 win at the Moncton Coliseum.

The Rouyn-Noranda Huskies hit the road for four games in the Maritimes Division, and probably wished that they hadn't. The Huskies lost all four contests, while being outscored 21-6 in the process. Halifax beat Rouyn-Noranda 6-1 and 3-2, while Moncton (5-2) and Acadie-Bathurst (7-1) accounted for the other two wins. The Huskies now own a 16-game winless streak.

Prior to their win over Rouyn-Noranda, the Acadie-Bathurst Titan doubled up the PEI Rocket 4-2 on Wednesday night, as the Titan and Wildcats continue to fight for second place in the Maritimes Division.

Three other games took place in the QMJHL, with Cape Breton beating Val-d'Or 7-4, PEI thrashing Cape Breton 8-3, and Val-d'Or knocking off Halifax 4-2.
