Lewiston MAINEiacs News Release


Lewiston, ME (QMJHL) - Just under two weeks ago, the Lewiston MAINEiacs returned home after three straight road wins, looking to improve on a 4-4 home record with five straight tilts at the Androscoggin Bank Colisee. They did just that, rattling off five consecutive wins against Quebec, Val-d'Or (2), and Baie-Comeau (2). This past weekend's series with the Drakkar featured two completely different games. On Saturday night, the MAINEiacs came out fast and furious, never looking back, scoring five goals in the first period of a 6-1 win. Then, on Sunday afternoon, Lewiston erased a pair of one-goal deficits, before tying the game with 48 seconds left, and ultimately winning on Etienne Brodeur's breakaway goal at 3:20 of overtime. With the two wins, the MAINEiacs extended their current winning streak to eight games in a row, while improving their overall record to 16-7-0-2 (34 points). Lewiston is now just two points behind Quebec for the top spot in the Telus East Division, while maintaining their fifth place standing overall.

Last Week in the Telus East Division

The Quebec Remparts (17-4-0-2, 36 pts) faced a tall task last weekend, as they hit the road to face three of the top four teams in the Maritimes Division. The Remparts started the weekend with a 5-2 win in Acadie-Bathurst, before grabbing a 4-3 overtime win in PEI on Saturday. On Sunday, the Saint John Sea Dogs had other ideas, earning their eighth win in nine games by shuting out Quebec 6-0.

The Victoriaville Tigres (13-11-0-1, 27 pts) split a pair of games last weekend. On Friday night, the Tigres took the ice at Colisee Desjardins, and proceeded to double up Moncton 4-2. Then, on Sunday, Victoriaville travelled to Chicoutimi, where they fell short 6-4.

Offense was the name of the game at the Colisee de Rimouski this weekend, as the Rimouski Oceanic (12-13-0-0, 24 pts) played a couple of home contests. The Oceanic got the weekend started with a 5-4 win over division rival Chicoutimi, before being edged out 6-5 by Cape Breton on Saturday.

The Chicoutimi Sagueneens (9-11-2-3, 23 pts) split a pair of games this weekend, as they continue to play well home home ice, while struggling on the road. Both contests took place within the division, as the Sagueneens lost 5-4 in Rimouski on Friday, before knocking off Victoriaville 6-4 on Sunday.

The Baie-Comeau Drakkar (1-18-3-3, 8 pts) picked up one point during their two-game trip to Lewiston, falling 6-1 on Saturday and 3-2 in overtime on Sunday. The Drakkar had two separate leads in Sunday's game, including a 2-1 advantage in the final minute, before the MAINEiacs came back to earn the victory. With the defeats, Baie-Comeau is now winless in 23 straight games.

Elsewhere in the QMJHL

The Shawinigan Cataractes continued their winning ways last weekend, and have now won eight of their last nine games. Both of Shawinigan's victories came on the road, as they defeated Rouyn-Noranda 7-3 on Saturday, before winning 3-1 in Val-d'Or on Sunday.

The Montreal Junior are also playing strong hockey out of the Telus West Division, having won nine of their last ten games. The Junior saw their eight-game winning streak come to an end with a 2-1 loss in Gatineau on Saturday, but sandwiched a pair of wins around it, beating Cape Breton 5-2 on Friday and Drummondville 5-1 on Sunday.

Thanks to a pair of wins last weekend, the Saint John Sea Dogs now own the best record in the league, currently sitting at 18-3-0-2 (38 pts). Along with their 6-0 shutout of Quebec, the Sea Dogs got the best of Acadie-Bathurst 5-3 on Saturday.

Friday night saw three other games, as PEI beat Halifax 5-1, Drummondville beat Cape Breton 3-2, and Val-d'Or beat Rouyn-Noranda 4-2. On Saturday, Drummondville blanked Moncton 4-0. Finally, on Sunday, Moncton edged Gatineau 5-4 in overtime.
