QMJHL Releases Finalists for Kevin-Lowe Trophy
May 25, 2022 - Quebec Maritimes Junior Hockey League (QMJHL) News Release
Charlottetown, PE - Noah Laaouan of the Charlottetown Islanders, Simon Lavigne of the Blainville-Boisbriand Armada and Vincent Sévigny of the Saint John Sea Dogs are the three nominees for the 2021-2022 Kevin-Lowe Trophy.
The trophy has been awarded annually to the QMJHL's best defensive defenseman since 2004-05 and is named after the Quebec Remparts alumnus who played in 1,254 NHL games with the Edmonton Oilers and New York Rangers. A six-time Stanley Cup champion, Lowe was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame two years ago.
Nominated for the second straight year, Noah Laaouan cemented his reputation as a steady presence on the blue line. After receiving an invitation to the Arizona Coyotes' training camp last fall, the Halifax native was a crucial piece in the Charlottetown Islanders' successes this season. Usually recognized for his defensive game, Laaouan exploded offensively by scoring 12 goals and adding 48 assists, nearly doubling his point production from last season. He also continued to shine in his own zone by maintaining an impressive +39 differential.
Simon Lavigne really stepped up his game for the Blainville-Boisbriand Armada this season. The hometown product was a solid defensive pillar for Bruce Richardson's squad, carrying his team to a 5th place finish in the Western Conference standings. The Armada's fifth-round selection at the 2018 QMJHL Entry Draft ended the campaign with six goals and 30 assists in 65 games. The Armada captain also finished the season with a plus/minus ratio of +6.
Vincent Sévigny was acquired by a contending team at the Holiday trade period. After raising the President Cup with the Victoriaville Tigres last June, he was traded to the Saint John Sea Dogs, hosts of the 2022 Memorial Cup tournament presented by Kia. After taking part in NHL training camps with both the Toronto and Ottawa squads last August, the Quebec City native finished with 64 points (18 goals, 46 assists) in 62 regular season games. He also ended the campaign with a very impressive plus/minus rating of +51.
