QMJHL Names Players of the Month
March 1, 2019 - Quebec Maritimes Junior Hockey League (QMJHL) News Release
FORWARD OF THE MONTH
Joseph Veleno (Drummondville Voltigeurs / 12GP-9G-16A-25P)
The Drummondville Voltigeurs have clinched top spot in the Central Division with plenty of time to spare this season while also leading the league in goals scored. Center Joseph Veleno has played a critical role in that success.
The fourth-year veteran from Kirkland, Quebec recorded at least one point in each of the Voltigeurs' 12 games during the month of February, including eight multi-point outings. The high-water mark for Veleno's output came in a two goal two assist effort against the Shawinigan Cataractes on February 17th. In addition to a +16 rating, Veleno registered one of his league-leading seven shorthanded goals during the month to go with a pair of game winning tallies. His outstanding play has translated into team success as the Voltigeurs completed their February schedule without suffering a regulation loss, part of a 14-game point streak for the club.
Veleno enters the final month of the regular season tied for the league scoring lead with 98 points in 51 games. His 40 goals place him in a tie for third in the "Q" in that department while he also ranks in the circuit's top five in assists, game winners and insurance goals. The first-round selection of the Detroit Red Wings at the 2018 NHL Entry Draft also leads the league with a +/- rating of +60!
**Honorable Mention - Raphaël Lavoie (Halifax Mooseheads / 12GP-11G-13A-24P)
Much like the Mooseheads themselves, Lavoie's game took off in the month of February. The 18-year-old from Chambly, Quebec started the month with a bang, producing a goal and four assists against the Sherbrooke Phoenix on February 1st, his first career five-point night in the "Q". Additionally, the third-year veteran recorded three multi-goal games, six contests of two points or more and was an impressive +20 on the month. A top prospect for the 2019 NHL Entry Draft, Lavoie has been a catalyst for the Mooseheads, who finished the month on an eight-game winning streak. His 71 points in 58 games place him second on the club in that category.
DEFENCEMAN OF THE MONTH
Noah Dobson (Rouyn-Noranda Huskies / 10GP-2G-16A-18P)
The Rouyn-Noranda Huskies have not lost a game since acquiring Noah Dobson from the Acadie-Bathurst Titan. An incredible feat when one considers the fact that the trade was made over seven weeks ago!
Recording points in nine of his team's ten games in February, the Summerside, PEI native started the month by chipping in three assists against his former Titan teammates on February 1st. He would outdo this with a four-assist outing on February 23rd against Shawinigan. Dobson recorded his first goal as a member of the Huskies on February 17th against Rimouski while finishing the month with a +/- rating of +16. Then there's the league leading Huskies themselves, who ended the month winners of 22 games in a row, tied for the third-longest such streak in QMJHL history.
Success has been no stranger to Dobson, especially over the past nine months. Between winning the 2018 Memorial Cup with the Titan, being selected in the first round of the 2018 NHL Entry Draft by the New York Islanders as well as representing Team Canada at the 2019 IIHF World Junior Hockey Championship, life has been eventful to say the least for the third-year blueliner. Dobson enters March with 44 points in 48 games, tied for ninth in scoring among all "Q" defensemen.
**Honorable Mention - Jared McIsaac (Halifax Mooseheads / 12GP-4G-15A-19P)
Jared McIsaac has steadily ramped up his offensive game from the Mooseheads' back end as the regular season enters its stretch drive. Riding a nine-game point streak as the calendar turns to March, the 18-year-old from Truro, Nova Scotia produced five multi-point games over the course of the past month. A second-round selection of the Detroit Red Wings at the 2018 NHL Entry Draft, McIsaac was a plus player for every February contest, finishing the month with a +20 rating. A member of Team Canada at the 2019 IIHF World Junior Hockey Championship, McIssac has vaulted into a tie for second in the league scoring race among defensemen with 56 points in 45 games.
ROOKIE OF THE MONTH
Egor Serdyuk (Victoriaville Tigres / 10GP-6G-8A-14P)
Moving halfway across the world to pursue a hockey dream is a dauting task. Succeeding upon arrival is nothing short of phenomenal. Serdyuk has done just that in his first season with the Tigres. The 17-year-old Russian winger was held off the scoresheet just once during the month of February. On two occasions, Serdyuk recorded multi-goal games, including his first career QMJHL hat trick on February 10th versus the Baie-Comeau Drakkar. Five of Serdyuk's goals on the month came with the man advantage. As the Tigres transition from the veteran squad that reached the league semi-finals last year, Serdyuk has played a key role in the Tigres' respectable showing this year. They currently sit fourth in the Western Conference entering the month of March.
Ranked 74th by NHL Central Scouting for the 2019 NHL Entry Draft among skaters playing in North America, Serdyuk currently leads all "Q" rookies with 56 points in 55 games. His 23 goals also place first among league freshmen. Serdyuk was selected by the Tigres in the first round, 31stoverall, at the 2018 CHL Import Draft.
**Honorable Mention - Cole McLaren (Halifax Mooseheads / 5-0, 1.20GAA, .952SV%)
Being able to rely on both of your goaltender throughout the season is one of the greatest assets any team can boast. The 2019 Memorial Cup host Mooseheads are just such a club. While starter Alexis Gravel has handled his workload admirably, Cole McLaren has been stellar in his own right when called upon. The Annapolis Royal, Nova Scotia native is currently riding a personal eight game winning streak following an undefeated February. On the 18th of the month, McLaren made his way between the pipes at Harbour Station and skated away with a 36-save shutout of the Saint John Sea Dogs, his fourth whitewash of the campaign. He enters the final month of the season with a 15-2 record, a goals against average of 1.57 and a .937% save percentage.
