QMJHL Mourns the Passing of Mike Bossy

April 15, 2022 - Quebec Maritimes Junior Hockey League (QMJHL) News Release

Quebec City, QC - It is with great sadness that the QMJHL was informed of the passing of one of the greatest players in its history, the legendary Michel "Mike" Bossy.

The one who terrorized so many opposing goaltenders on the ice was also able to charm fans off of it, thanks to both his positive energy and his tremendous generosity. To say that Mike Bossy was an outstanding player for the QMJHL is far from enough to evaluate the true impact he had on the league while he suited up for the Laval National between 1973-1977.As part of the League's 50th Anniversary celebrations in 2019, Bossy was named as the sixth greatest QMJHL player of all-time.

In all of Canadian Junior hockey history, no player has scored more than Mike Bossy's 309 goals. It's hard to believe anyone will ever touch that benchmark, which has stood since 1976-77. Born and raised in Montreal, Bossy never scored fewer than 70 goals in any of his four seasons with Laval and remains the only player in league history to do so. His seasons of 118, 149, 136 and 126 points, respectively, place him ninth overall on the Q's all-time scoring list with 532 points.

Bossy never slowed down after graduating from the junior ranks, hitting the 50-goal mark in nine straight NHL seasons, making him the only player in league history to record as many. Bossy was also the winner of four-straight Stanley Cups with the New York Islanders, from 1979-80 to 1982-83.In his first season with the Islanders, the 15th overall pick of the 1977 NHL Entry Draft scored 53 goals to take home the Calder Trophy as Rookie of the Year. In January 1981, he became only the second player in NHL history to score 50 goals in 50 games, joining Maurice Richard.

Following a ten-year career that saw him score 573 goals and win the Lady Byng Trophy three times, Bossy was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1991 and then the QMJHL Hall of Fame in 1998. Since the 1980-81 season, a QMJHL trophy named after him is awarded annually to the player deemed to be the league's top prospect ahead of the NHL Entry Draft.
