BOUCHERVILLE, Thursday, August 11th, 2005 (QMJHL) - The Quebec Major Junior Hockey League announced today, following the General Managers and Coaches meetings, that it will mirror the rule changes adopted by the National Hockey League for its upcoming 2005-06 season.
The adoption of the new rules is meant to enable players to showcase their skills while promoting a faster and more exciting game. Here are the details:
1. Reinforce on Interference, Hooking and Holding / Obstruction.
2. Goaltenders:
- Retain AHL goaltender's crease behind the net - limiting where goaltenders may play the puck. ( Puck in the crease )
- Re-emphasize rule requiring minor penalty for goaltender freezing the puck to encourage fewer stoppages.
3. Overtime / Shoot-out / Points:
- There will be one overtime period of 4 on 4 sudden death for a duration of five (5) minutes. If tied at the conclusion of 4 on 4, both teams will then participate in a 3 man shoot-out (best of 3, unless game is not settled). After this, sudden death to the end of the line-up.
- ( You can change the goaltender after each shooter )
- The Point System will consist of:
- 2 points for win in regulation.
- 1 point for each team for a tie at the conclusion of regulation.
- 1 additional point for a win in 4 on 4 or shoot-out.
4. Tag-Up:
- The tag-up rule (as opposed to the "off-sides" rule used in 2004-05)
5. Line:
- The red line will be removed for the purpose of a two-line pass.
6. Shooting Puck in Stands:
- Players shooting puck in stands from defensive zone will result in an automatic two (2) minute penalty similar to the goaltender penalty for delay of game.
7. Team Icing Puck Not Allowed to Change:
- When offending team ices the puck intentionally, they are not allowed to change the players "on the ice". Determination of players "on the ice" will be made when the puck leaves the offending player's stick.
8. Playing Strength in Overtime:
- Any carry-over of penalties from regulation time to overtime and shoot-out will now be served on the same basis as in regulation time.;
