Pump Jacks Sweep Aces in Shutout Fashion

July 13, 2011 - Texas Collegiate League (TCL)
East Texas PumpJacks News Release

Taking the mound after Dusty Ross' outstanding start Monday night, Brad Fisher had a lot to live up to Tuesday night against the Alexandria Aces.

The Oral Roberts freshman answered the call and then some.

Fisher carried a no-hit bid until the seventh inning, following Ross not giving up a hit until the fifth inning last night. Fisher allowed five base runners in the form of walks but his six strikeouts and strong defense in the field shut down the Aces, 10-0.

The Pump Jacks pitching staff allowed only nine hits from the Aces in the two game set at historic Driller Park while the Jacks batters scored 22 runs on 26 hits in the series.

The Jacks extended their win streak to five and have won their past 13 of 15 games. With the win, East Texas moves to a TCL-best 24-11 on the season and are 8-0 against Alexandria so far in 2011.

Seth Granger reached base four times in five plate appearances, going 2-for-3 with a pair of walks and runs scored. Tyler Girouard picked up two RBI, going 2-for-3 and scoring one run. Jace Statum posted a pair of hits and scored twice. Beau Maggi extended his hit streak to eight games with an RBI single. Nathan Pittman and Zach Looney each posted RBI singles as well. Zach Benson, starting in his first game as a Pump Jack, picked up his first RBI on a deep sacrifice fly to left field to round out the Jacks scoring spree.

With a league-leading 81 stolen bases as a team, the Jacks continue to use their speed to score runs. Statum swiped three bags, giving him seven on the season. Granger took two, while Looney and Girouard each picked up one.

The Jacks used a combination of hits, heads-up base running and costly Aces errors to post a five spot in the bottom half of the second. Girouard belted a two RBI single and Looney scored on a passed ball from Aces catcher Ridge Gonsoulin, who was making only his second start behind the plate.

With a runner at third and two outs, Statum drew a two out walk and proceeded to round first and head to second. The pitcher stepped off and threw to second, prompting Girouard to head home and reach safely as he touched his hand on home plate sliding around the tag by the catcher Gonsoulin. The throw back to second was late and the Jacks had a 4-0 lead with Statum at second. Statum then took third, followed by Ty Marlow getting hit by a pitch. Marlow put himself in a pickle with the speedy Statum at third and stayed alive long enough for him to score before being retired on the 1-3-4-3-6-1 pick off.

Pittman kept Fisher's no-hit bid alive with a diving snag in centerfield, his second outstanding play in the field in as many days. Fisher responded, retiring the next nine Aces he faced in a row.

The Jacks posted five more in the fifth inning with RBI singles from Maggi, Looney and Pittman. Errors by the Aces catcher and first baseman, combined with Benson's sac fly pushed the Jacks lead to 10-0.

Fisher picked up his third win in five starts in his deepest outing of the season. He gave up a walk to lead off the seventh and Valentine Helldobler broke up the no-hit bid with a single to left. Fisher then sat down the next three batters in order, striking out the final two batters he faced.

Joining the Jacks for the second straight summer, Andy Steinmetz made his 2011 debut, taking over for Fisher to start the eighth. The University of Central Arkansas junior struck out four in two innings out of the bullpen in a non-save situation.

The Jacks travel to Brazos Valley tomorrow for a two game set with the Bombers before returning to historic Driller Park for a two game series against the Coppell Copperheads.

Friday marks the fourth Fireworks Friday of the season, presented by KLTV News. The Jacks will celebrate with a spectacular post-game show set to it's own unique soundtrack.

Saturday night will feature a special giveaway as the Pump Jacks wrap up the series with the Copperheads. Stay tuned to www.pumpjacksbaseball.com for more details.
