Pump Jacks Roster Takes Shape

May 28, 2014 - Texas Collegiate League (TCL)
East Texas PumpJacks News Release

The Pump Jacks dodged raindrops to practice Tuesday, then added a host of new players to the roster on Wednesday. Seven pitchers, a catcher, an outfielder, and a utility player were added the squad in preparation for Opening Day.

The pitching staff will be bolstered by California right-handers John Jaeger and Jordon Gonzalez, control specialist Kyle Garvin, righties Darren Lauer and Allen Ellis, redshirt hurler Jacob Byrd, and Texas native John Satriano.

Reynaldo Echenique brings a Gold Glove to the catcher's position, and fellow Miami native Danny Bolanos will both pitch and take the field for the Pump Jacks. Rounding out the additions is Kansas outfielder Joe Moroney.

In his debut season at the University of the Pacific, Jaeger transitioned into the West Coast Conference from high school without skipping a beat. As a true freshman, Jaeger finished in the top-10 in the conference with five saves. He posted a 4.03 ERA with 20 strikeouts in 29 innings.

Gonzalez accompanied Jaeger to the Pump Jacks from the University of the Pacific. Despite a slow start to his freshman year, Gonzalez made five appearances with six strikeouts in 9.1 innings.

Garvin will be taking the mound for the Pump Jacks this summer after posting a 2.43 ERA in 14 games for the College of Idaho this spring. Garvin struck out 34 and walked just five in 29.2 innings, holding his opponents to a .209 average.

Lauer is no stranger to summer collegiate ball, having pitched for the for the Quakertown Blazers in the Atlantic Collegiate League. This spring at Keystone College, Lauer started seven games and made a pair of relief appearances. He went 5-1 with a 4.06 ERA, tossing a shutout and two complete games.

Hailing from Mechanicsville, Va., Ellis appeared in 15 games for Longwood University this spring. Starting nine games, Ellis held opponents to a .236 average in 48.1 innings.

Coming off a redshirt year at Belhaven University, Byrd comes to the Pump Jacks from Monroe, La. During his sophomore campaign last year at LSU-Shreveport, Byrd led the Pilots with four saves. As a freshman, he was a part of a record-breaking squad that soared to a national No. 1 ranking in the NAIA.

A Bellaire native, Satriano quickly became a dependable bullpen arm in his first season at Nicholls State University. This spring, Satriano posted a 3.09 ERA in 28 appearances and 32 innings pitched, with 18 strikeouts.

Echenique brings an outstanding defensive presence to the Pump Jacks. The sophomore backstop earned a Region XV Gold Glove this spring at Monroe College, where he played for Jacks head coach John Foster.

Another player who has seen action under Coach Foster, Bolanos will cast a huge shadow over TCL fields this summer. The 6-foot-6, 265-pound Bolanos has hit 16 home runs over the last two years at Northwest Oklahoma State. If fans aren't wowed by his prodigious power, they'll surely take note of a fastball that can reach the low to mid-90's. A junior for the Rangers, Bolanos played in 32 games and posted a .263 average with five home runs this spring.

Wrapping up the new Pump Jacks is Moroney, who redshirted this spring at the University of Kansas. Like Lauer, Moroney spent last season playing summer collegiate baseball, batting .308 with eight doubles for the Watertown Rams in the New York Collegiate Baseball League.

Although the roster now stands at 27 players, not all of the Pump Jacks will be available for the opener tomorrow in Dallas against the Texas Marshals. Dustin Williams and his Oklahoma State teammates are hosting an NCAA Regional this weekend, and Raymond Pedrina's Lewis-Clark State squad is currently hosting the NAIA World Series.

Returning outfielder Connor Huesers will join the club shortly after helping Chico State reach the NCAA Division II World Series.

Foster and the Pump Jacks open the season with a two-game series against the Marshals before heading to Lafayette to take on the Acadiana Cane Cutters over the weekend.

The Pump Jacks' home opener is next Tuesday, June 3, then they host the Woodlands Strykers. Tuesday is also Pump Jacks Schedule Poster Giveaway presented by Drake Pump Jacks. The first 500 fans through the gates will receive an attractive poster featuring Boomer and the 2014 Pump Jacks home schedule.
