East Texas PumpJacks News Release
The early-season play of the Pump Jacks has fans around Kilgore and beyond buzzing, with an unblemished franchise-record 7-0 start to the season at home and a 12-3 mark overall in the Texas Collegiate League.
The Pump Jacks are also being noticed nationally, as the Jacks are ranked #27 in the country by Perfect Game in their initial Summer Collegiate Team Rankings. The weekly rankings consider more than 250 summer collegiate league teams in 28 different leagues.
Perfect Game is an Iowa-based organization that is considered the country's top resource in baseball player recruiting, particularly at the high school and college ages. In addition to the national summer collegiate poll, Perfect Game conducts player showcases throughout the country.
The Pump Jacks were also ranked last summer, debuting at #23 just before the calendar turned from June to July, and climbing all the way up to #8 in the nation before concluding the season at #22 in their record-setting 2011 TCL season.
Opening the season at #1 in the Perfect Game national summer league rankings are the Harwich Mariners from the well-respected Cape Cod League, one of six teams from that league in the Top-25 of the poll and one of three Cape Cod League teams in the top-5. Ranking second in the poll, which includes 30 teams total, are the Newport Gulls of the New England Collegiate Baseball League. They are followed by the La Crosse Loggers from the Northwoods League in third place in the initial rankings.
Only one other TCL team, the Brazos Valley Bombers, is ranked in the Perfect Game poll, at #21. But since the last games considered for the rankings over the weekend, the Pump Jacks have won one game while the Bombers have lost two games to put East Texas in front of the Bombers in first place in the TCL standings.
The Jacks return home for a two-game set with the Victoria Generals tonight and tomorrow night. Fans can enjoy $1 draft beers and 50-cent soft drinks in the second Thirsty Thursday of the season at Driller Park tonight, and can watch the night sky light up with fireworks in the first Fireworks Friday of the summer on Friday night, sponsored by 1st Choice Personnel and CBS-19.
