East Texas PumpJacks News Release
The Pump Jacks recorded ten hits, but a four-run first inning allowed the Brazos Valley Bombers to take game one of the two-game series 5-1.
The East Texas Pump Jacks dropped the first game of the two-game series against the first place Brazos Valley Bombers 5-1 on Tuesday night in Bryan College Station.
The Pump Jacks out hit the Bombers, recording 10 hits but were unable to get runners in scoring position home, stranding a total of nine runners on base.
Jordan Price pitched a complete game for the Pump Jacks, the third by the Jacks pitching rotation this season. Price started out rocky, getting into trouble allowing four runs to score in the first inning. However, he then settled down to keep the Bombers scoreless until the eighth inning. In his eight innings pitched, Price allowed five runs (only three earned) on six hits, while recording four strikeouts.
The Pump Jacks opened the game with the threat of adding the first run thanks to a lead off double from Matthew Dickey. He then advanced to third on a passed ball, with only one out. However the Jacks wasted the opportunity, stranding him at third, to leave it open for the Bombers who wasted no time plating four runs in the home half on the inning.
The Pump Jacks got their only run of the ballgame in the top of the fourth inning. Joey Armstrong opened the frame with a double to right. Mitch Meyer followed with a single to put runners on the corners. Mark Mathias then added a single of his own to drive home Armstrong, and get the Pump Jack on the board.
The Bombers added another run in the eighth inning thanks to a costly East Texas error, and a single. The run was the second unearned run of the game allowed by the Pump Jacks.
Stranded bases runners continued to the be the theme as the Jacks threatened a rally in the ninth but were unable to score any more runs, handing the Bombers the win 5-1. Mathais advanced to first thanks to an error to get the lead of batter on the inning on the base path. He then moved to second on a single by Zach Jones, but a strikeout and a fly out left both runners on base at the end of the ballgame.
Dickey, Armstrong, Mathais, Meyer, and Jones all recorded two hits on the night, with Mathias earning the lone RBI.The Pump Jacks will go for the series split in game two against the Brazos Valley Bombers on Wednesday night.
