East Texas PumpJacks News Release
Former Pump Jack, Hunter Dozier, shines and collects Southland Confernce Player and Hitter of the Year honors. After an outstanding regular season with Stephen F. Austin State University, Pump Jacks alumni Hunter Dozier heads for the conclusion of his junior campaign with a bevy of awards under his belt.
Dozier has become a household name around college and pro baseball after lighting it up for SFA this season. He was most recently named the Southland Conference Player of the Year by a vote of the league's head coaches. He was also named the league's hitter of the year, becoming the seventh player in the last eight years to earn both hitter and player of the year accolades.
At the end of the regular season, Dozier led not only the Lumberjacks, but also the Southland Conference in almost every offensive category. The Denton native hit .394 on the year with 50 RBI, 23 doubles, and 12 stolen bases. He is also enjoying an SFA record streak of reaching base safely in 45 consecutive games.
His numbers were so impressive that he led the league in batting average, doubles, RBI, total bases (154), and slugging percentage (.759). He also ranked second in hits (80), and on-base percentage (.483). Dozier also ranks in the top three in NCAA Division I with 17 home runs.
Dozier is currently a semifinalist for the Brooks Wallace Award, which goes to the nation's top shortstop as well as a semifinalist (one of 40) for the Dick Howser Trophy, which goes to the nation's top player. Dozier is a hot prospect in the upcoming MLB Amateur Draft. In Baseball America's latest rankings, he is ranked No. 39 overall, which would see him selected at the end of the first round. The fist round of the draft will take place on June 6th, with the remainder taking place the next two days.
Dozier and the Lumberjacks continue their season in the Southland Conference Tournament. Though SFA dropped a tough opener to Oral Roberts this morning, Dozier proved to be the offensive spark, going 2-for-5. The Lumberjacks will look to avoid elimination in their second game of the tournament against an opponent to be determined. The Pump Jacks open the defense of their title on Thursday, May 30, on the road against the Texas Marshals. They open their 2013 home schedule on Tuesday, June 4, against the Acadiana Cane Cutters, then conclude their opening homestand with a championship rematch against the Victoria Generals.
