Pugh honored by af2
The arenafootball2 league office announced yesterday that Manchester Wolves' DB Travis Pugh was named the af2's ADT Co-Defensive Player of the Week. Pugh will share the Week 16 accolade with the Louisville Fire's Rusty Midlam.
The weekly award earned by Pugh, the first in his af2 career, is the first honor bestowed to a Wolves player in the 2007 season. Pugh earned the award thanks to his seven-tackle, two forced fumble and one pass deflection performance in last Friday's upset victory over the previously undefeated Wilkes-Barre Scranton Pioneers (13-1), 49-46, on Brady Sullivan Field at the Verizon Wireless Arena.
With just 12 games under his belt the South Carolina native is currently ranked third on the team in tackles ( 54.0), second in interceptions (4), second in pass deflections (8) and tied for second in forced fumbles (2).
"Travis has come a long way since the beginning of our season," said Wolves Head Coach Ben Bennett. "He has worked hard and we're proud of him for winning the weekly award, his performance was a big reason for our success against Wilkes-Barre."
Pugh (6-1, 195), an af2 rookie, came to the Wolves after a solid four-year career (2001-2004) at Clemson University as a free safety. As a Tiger Pugh played in a total of 37 games, including three Bowl appearances, starting his last two seasons where he registered 191 of his 238 career tackles. Following his junior year Pugh, a South Carolina native, was awarded the "Solid Rock Award" from his coaching staff for his consistent and dependable play at the safety position. At Manning High School in South Carolina, Pugh was an all-state, all-area and all-region selection after putting together a complete career on the defense side of the ball with 12 interceptions, 308 total tackles and 40 pass deflections. During his senior season at Manning, he also participated in the Shrine Bowl and was awarded the state's fanpoll.com Defensive Player of the Year honor.
The Wolves addition of Pugh to their roster this season marked the fifth player to trade in their orange Tiger uniform for the blue and black of the Wolves. Pugh is joined with Maurice Fountain ( 11.5 sacks) as rookies this season for Manchester. The former Tigers that have played for the Wolves have been WR/LB J.J. McKelvey (2004-2005), DB Brian Mance (2006), who both play for Jon Bon Jovi's Philadelphia Soul in the Arena Football League, and OL/DL Cory Groover (2006).
Manchester (8-6) will face their East Division rival Albany Conquest (5-9) this Saturday in Albany, NY at 7:00 p.m. at the Times Union Center. Fans can listen live on WFEA 1370AM.
