Pro Football's Oldest Player Retires

Published on May 14, 2003 under Canadian Football League (CFL) News Release

Toronto, Ontario – The Winnipeg Blue Bombers of the CFL announced today that long time Punter, Bob Cameron, has called it a career. Cameron was born July 18, 1954 and last season celebrated his 48th birthday. In the 2002 season, Cameron passed the NFL's iron man, George Blanda (who also played until he was 48) to become professional football's oldest active player.

Cameron was originally drafted in the 1st Round (6th Overall) by the Edmonton Eskimos in 1977 out of Acadia University in Nova Scotia. Edmonton eventually released Cameron, leaving him free to sign with the Winnipeg Blue Bombers in December of 1979. He played his first professional football game as a Blue Bomber in 1980. Ironically, Cameron played his first-ever game at Commonwealth Stadium versus the team that had originally drafted him. On that day, July 9, 1980, Bob made 5 punts for 212 yards with a long of 50 yards. His counterparts in that game included CFL greats Hank Ilesic and Dave Cutler.

Cameron went on to become one of the most prolific kickers of the modern era. He now owns several CFL records in the Regular Season, Playoffs and Grey Cup;
