New York Lizards News Release

The Long Island Lizards fell to the New Jersey Pride, 15-14, in an overtime thriller, to open the 2005 Major League Lacrosse season on Friday evening. Liam Banks was named Bud Light MVP, scoring four goals and three assists, including the game-winner in overtime. A crowd of 3,874 fans were on hand at Mitchel Field to take part in the Lizards home opener.

The Pride, who finished the 2004 season with a league-worst 1-11 record, were without the services of the league's all-time leading goal scorer, Jesse Hubbard, who was taken out of the game in the first quarter after breaking his index finger. However, Scott Urick (6 goals) made up for Hubbard on attack.

With the score tied at 8-8 at halftime, the two teams traded the lead throughout the second half. After two consecutive goals by Blake Miller with just under two minutes to play, the Lizards led 14-13. However, Urick scored his sixth goal of the game to force overtime.

Both teams had a chance to score in overtime, however, Banks scored the game-winner 2:37 in, beating Cattrano after he made three point-blank saves in the extra period.

Blake Miller (5 goals, 1 assist) led the Lizards, while Chris Massey (3 goals, 1 assist), Tim Goettelmann (2 goals, 1 assist) and Matt Panetta (2 goals, 1 assist) also chipped in. Greg Cattrano recorded 23 saves in his first game for the Lizards.

Long Island (0-1) is back in action next Friday, May 27th, when they host the Rochester Rattlers at Mitchel Field.
