Pride Snap Whitecaps' Win Streak in Decisive Fashion

December 1, 2018 - Premier Hockey Federation (PHF)
Connecticut Whale News Release

On Saturday night, the Boston Pride did what no team has done since the Minnesota Whitecaps joined the NWHL - beat them. Gigi Marvin led with two goals as the Pride took a 5-1 win Saturday night at sold-out TRIA Rink in St. Paul. Boston improved to 4-2 with the win, while the Whitecaps' win streak ended at six.

"[The Whitecaps] are a great team, and we just knew that we needed to get a lot of shots on net," said Pride forward Haley Skarupa, who had a goal and an assist on the night. "We know that they're a fast team and they rely on their speed, so we knew that if we could hang with them for the first five minutes, first period, get them on their heels, we'd be successful."

After a scoreless opening 17 minutes, Mallory Souliotis netted her first NWHL goal on an assist from Amanda Pelkey to give the Pride the lead. The captain, Jillian Dempsey, made it 2-0 before the end of the period, for her team-leading sixth of the season.

Amanda Boulier cut the advantage to one in the second period with a blast from the right circle. Jonna Curtis recorded her 10th point of the season with the assist. But Skarupa's power-play goal with 35 seconds left in the period pushed the Pride lead back to two.

Marvin netted both of her goals in the third period, including one-timing a pass from Denisa Krizova late in the game to cement the win.

Minnesota had seven power-play opportunities on the night, but couldn't capitalize with the advantage, as Pride goaltender Katie Burt made 36 saves in the win.

"Our D did a great job tonight keeping shots to the outside," said Burt. "When you're going against the fastest forwards in the world, it's important to keep them outside. Once we got our legs under us, we did a good job shutting them down."

The Whitecaps will have their shot at revenge on Sunday at 2 p.m. CT. Tickets are sold out once again, but the game will be streamed live at NWHL.zone/watch.
