Pride Return to Holman after Ninth Straight Win
August 30, 2003 - Canadian American League (Can-Am)
American Defenders of New Hampshire News Release
After a very slow start to the second half of the season, the Nashua Pride have regained the form they displayed in their run to the First Half North Division crown. After last night's 6-3 win over the Somerset Patriots, their sixth consecutive win over the Patriots and second Somerset sweep in nine days, Nashua's season-high nine game win streak leaves the Pride at 24-24 in the second half, the first time the Pride have been at the .500 mark since the All-Star break. Their overall record now stands at 63-48, the third best record in the league.
As for the other teams in the North Division, while the Pride have been hot, the Long Island Ducks have seen their lead in the second half standings evaporate. The Ducks have lost six in a row, three to the Pride and three to Bridgeport. This has allowed the Bluefish to take a two-game lead over the Ducks for first place in the division. Nashua is now only 6.5 out of first while Bridgeport, who come to Nashua for what could be a crucial final series Sept. 12-14 for the âFish's playoff hopes, has won four straight as they head on the road to face Atlantic City.
Speaking of the Surf, the South Division's second half lead is entirely up in the air. Atlantic City, bolstered by the acquisition of Newark pitcher Matt Wagner and Pride outfielder Tim Garland, both All-Stars, have been flirting with first place, but currently sit one-game back of Camden. The âSharks won the South in the first half and already have a playoff spot, but in addition to the Surf, who are 7-3 in their last ten, Somerset is just 2.5 games back of Camden. However the Patriots have lost 8 of their last 10 and appear to be fading from contention.
The Atlnatic Legaue's other two teams, the nomadic Pennsylvania Road Warriors in the North and defending champion Newark Bears in the South, have long been out of the running, but have certainly played a large role in the way things have played out this year. Warriors players like Norm Hutchins, Isaias Nunez, Gustavo Escobar and more have played their way from a life on the road onto title-contending teams, while Newark's ex-stars Jose Lima and Rickey Henderson have made a whole new generation stand up and take notice of independent baseball.
It has been a milestone year for both the Pride and the Atlantic League in 2003. The action is just heating up and everything is still to play for. Join the Pride down the stretch at Historic Holman Stadium and see another chapter in the short but great history of New Hampshire's team.
