Pride Make Statement, Sweep Weekend Series of Whitecaps

After serving the Minnesota Whitecaps their first-ever NWHL loss with a 5-1 win on Saturday night, the Boston Pride followed up with an equally decisive performance on Sunday, cruising to a 7-2 victory. With the win, Boston improved to 5-2 on the season while Minnesota dropped to 6-2 after opening its inaugural season on a six-game win streak.
"Our game plan was very simple," said Pride forward Gigi Marvin. "We knew it was going to be another hard game. We just wanted to keep things simple and be solid from the D zone up."
It was Marvin who got things started for the Pride with her third goal of the weekend. Boston then quickly pushed the advantage to 2-0, with McKenna Brand one-timing home a pass from the right post.
Emma Stauber pulled a goal back for the Whitecaps before the end of the period to make it 2-1, batting in a loose puck after a scrum in front.
The Pride once again scored early in the second period, with Amanda Pelkey streaking down the left wing and burying her shot just 32 seconds in to give Boston a 3-1 lead.
Kate Schipper drew the Whitecaps back within one once again, taking off on a breakaway and dancing around Pride goaltender Katie Burt to make it 3-2, but four unanswered goals from the Pride put the game out of reach for Minnesota.
Alyssa Gagliardi's shot from the point on the power play made it 4-2 with 3:28 remaining in the second. Rookie Mallory Souliotis then scored her second career goal - after scoring her first Saturday night - with a shot from the point about five minutes into the third. Denisa Krizova made it 6-2 with a shot from in close, before Haley Skarupa got in all alone to seal the decisive victory.
Burt was exceptional in making 26 saves in the win. While the scores may have been lopsided, make no mistake: Burt was instrumental in Boston's sweep of Minnesota.
"Katie Burt was phenomenal again, which is no surprise to us," said Marvin. "You can see the depth - every line scored, defensemen scored, and our goaltender played well. We're very happy with this weekend."
The Whitecaps are off next weekend, while Boston heads to Newark to take on the Metropolitan Riveters at 2 p.m. on Sunday. Tickets are available at NWHL.zone/tickets.
