Pride Fall to Skyhawks; 11-5

(Nashua, N.H., July 8, 2008) The Sussex Skyhawks took control of the game early, scoring six runs in the top of the first inning, propelling them to an 11-5 victory over the Nashua Pride at Historic Holman Stadium on Tuesday Night.

Pride starting pitcher Nicolas Suero (2-5) suffered the loss in his shortest outing of the season, going two and one-third innings, giving up eight runs (six earned), on six hits, two walks and one strike out. Pride reliever German Melendez was tagged for three runs (two earned) by Sussex in his three and two-thirds innings of relief.

Skyhawks starter Matt Salvato earned the win (5-2) going six innings, giving up five runs, on nine hits, two walks and two strike outs. Rich Lawyer was the lone man out of the bullpen for Sussex, pitching three shut-out innings to finish the game.

Sussex second baseman Chris Brown led the way belting two home runs in his first two at-bats. Brown finished the game 2-for-4 with three RBI. Also adding a home run for the Skyhawks was first baseman Matt Weston, he finished 2-for-5 with a pair of RBI. Left fielder Alex Frazier was 1-for-2 in the game with three RBI, while designated hitter Walter Young took sole possession of the league lead in RBI, driving in a pair of runs and upping his total to 38 on the season.

Nashua right fielder Jeremy Pickrel hit his eighth home run of the season, finishing the game 2-for-4 with a double and RBI. Center fielder Vinny Pennell recorded two hits in the effort, going 2-for-4, while Pride second baseman Ismael Castro, catcher Luis Rodriguez, and designated hitter Aregenis Tavarez each notched RBI.

The Pride will play the Worcester Tornadoes in a one game showdown at Historic Holman Stadium on Wednesday night, at 7:05pm, when right hander Jarrett Stawarz (3-2) makes the start for the Pride. The Tornadoes are scheduled to send right hander Junior Guerrero to the mound.
