Prentiss, Stallings and Willis take week two accolades
April 12, 2005 - arenafootball2 (af2) News Release
CHICAGO - Memphis offensive specialist KEVIN PRENTISS, Louisville wide receiver/defensive back TONY STALLINGS and Tulsa offensive/defensive lineman AHMAD WILLIS have been named the Offensive Player, U.S. Army Ironman and ADT Defensive Player of the Week, respectively, for Week 2 of the 2005 season.
OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Prentiss (5-8, 155, Mississippi State), in his third season, tied a five-year old af2 record by scoring eight touchdowns (48 points) in a 66-41 win over Amarillo on Friday night. Prentiss caught six touchdowns and ran back two more on kickoff returns, helping his Xplorers improve to 2-0 on the year. Even though it is still early in the season, Prentiss has 66 points and is on pace to obliterate the single season scoring record of 284 points by Shon King in 2000. King, who played for Quad City in 2000, is the only other player to record eight touchdowns in a game. He did it against the Greensboro Prowlers on May 26 that season by catching seven touchdown passes and running one kickoff back for a score. Prentiss, who was named to the American Conference All-af2 First Team last season, never won a player of the week award prior to this effort. He is the second Xplorer to receive a weekly honor in as many weeks. Khreem Smith won the ADT Defensive Player of the Week last week.
U.S. ARMY IRONMAN OF THE WEEK
Stallings (5-11, 200, Louisville), in his third season, made important plays on both sides of the ball to help his Louisville Fire to a 56-42 season-opening win over the Rio Grande Valley Dorados on Saturday night. On offense, Stallings rushed the ball three times for 16 yards and two touchdowns and he caught one pass for seven yards. He also had a kick return of 19 yards that setup another Louisville touchdown. On defense, Stallings nabbed two interceptions and registered 2.5 tackles, including one for a loss. This is the first weekly award of Stallings af2 career and the first for a Louisville Fire player since Anthony Payton won Offensive Player of the Week in Week 9 of the 2004 season.
ADT DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Willis (6-2, 275, Northwestern State (LA)), in his second season, put forth a solid defensive effort to help the Talons to their first win of 2005 season, a 61-51 decision over Bossier-Shreveport on Saturday night. The powerful lineman recorded two and a half tackles, two sacks and two forced fumbles against the Battle Wings. Both of his sacks came at points in the game when the Battle Wings were driving to take the lead in the game. Willis' first sack came near the end of the second quarter with the score knotted at 21. The sack caused a fumble which the Talons recovered. His second one came on the game's final play, forcing fumble that teammate Anton Ceaser smothered up in the endzone to preserve the win for the Talons. This is the first weekly award for Willis and the first for a Talon this season.
